PSA: IRS phishing scam still happening

My parents just got a scam call claiming that the IRS is filing a lawsuit against them.  The message said to call a random number to get more information.

PLEASE if you get a phone call from anybody claiming to be the IRS, credit card company, bank, whoever - that you aren't expecting or don't necessarily recognize - hang up and call them back from the published 800 number listed online.

The IRS website reports that over $14 million has been stolen using this scam over the last couple of years.  Don't be one of them!

  • I get these calls/voicemails at least once or twice a month. It's ridiculous. For the record, the IRS always sends a letter.

I work in the utility industry and there are so many scams on utility payments right now, even in small town municipal utilities. They say they're going to cut off your service if you don't give a credit card or bank info for you"past due" bill. They even give a call back number that they answer live with "littlecity municipal utility office." It's crazy the lengths some of these scammers go to.
  • Yep I got a call like that last year a couple times - I just hung up instantly.
