NBR: Article - The Really Big One - PNW Earthquake in the next 50 years.
I saw this on PB and thought it was a really fascinating article. I know we don't typically do articles or current events, but it's been slow lately. The earth could be demolished in a million ways, but it's still fascinating the science behind it.
http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2015/07/20/the-really-big-oneHere's the cliffs notes that the OP posted since it's a long article.
Cliff Notes: The Cascadia subduction zone is capable of an
earthquake between 8.7 - 9.2. Basically the ocean plate is not moving
underneath the continental plate, the continental plate is stuck so it's
increasing the altitude along the west coast. That can't go on
forever, it will basically unstick, there will be LARGE movement. They
didn't know much about the seismic history of the area until the 80s and
early 90s so the buildings aren't built to sustain this. They will all
collapse and roughly 15 minutes later there will be a tsunami that's
20-100 feet high varying with the coastline. They estimate 13,000
people will die, 27,000 injured and those are winter estimates. If it
happens in the summer, it will be many more than that. Hotels and
business are not required to post evacuation routes, they are not
required to train employees for evacuation. The tsunami zone will be
uninhabitable for years. Surrounding areas will not have power for 3-6
months, no drinking water and sewage systems for 1-3 years, and 3+ years
before they build new hospitals. FEMA estimates that everything west
of I-5 "will be toast".
