PSA: Prime Day Sale on iRobot Roomba 595 Pet Vacuum Cleaning Robot

Looks like it's 34% off at $250 for the next 18 hours. Not sure if this is the model people on here have been eyeing, but at such a mark down, it seemed worth mentioning.

I hate the "lightning deals" types of sales. My mom gave me a $100 gift card to Amazon for my birthday (and the password for their Amazon Prime), so it would feel irresponsible not to pay attention today. I wish you could at least sort the deals by department. Oh well.

Re: PSA: Prime Day Sale on iRobot Roomba 595 Pet Vacuum Cleaning Robot

  • I nearly bought this, then realized it doesn't have a HEPA filter, which would go nowhere towards helping my dog's allergies to dustmites. so while it might keep the dog hair down, it won't do anything to help us avoid repeated rounds of prednisone (which could potentially have terrible side effects like vision loss) or allergy shots ($240 a shot). I'm eyeing the 870 (currently $599 new) I'm tracking the price on "like-new" used models.

there are a couple things on my baby wishlist that are up as lightening deals later today.

  • The lightning deals just make me so nervous! But the deals have been pretty good if you can catch them at just the right time.

I just bought a two bike rack (lightning deal) for my car and a beginner sewing machine for $110 total. My giftcard was $100, but I sold a Wii balance board and games earlier this month for $45 and the extra blow money was burning a hole in my pocket anyway. And I hope the inexpensive but name brand sewing machine will suit my very very rudimentary skills and needs. I just want to make some pillow case covers and a baby gift here or there.

Thanks for the reminder!  I snagged a humidifier for $20.  We really needed one last winter, and I didn't want to spend $40 for one.

understandable, the first one was a pretty amazing price.  I'm comparing the price to the potential medical bills multiple rounds of pred could lead to or the price of the allergy shots. If a $370 vacuum can keep me from spending $1000+ a year on allergy shots or potentially ending-up with a blind dog, or a dog with weak bones (prednisone is so terrible!). it doesn't seem so bad. we bought a big HEPA filter for the main area of the house and her itchyness has decreased significantly, but keeping up on 3-4x a week vacuuming has been a chore (ha, pun intended), I don't expect that to get easier with an infant around.

I told DH yesterday that the Dave Ramsey plan has made it so that now when I have free money to spend, it's very hard for me to spend it joyfully. I feel either guilty about spending it or worry overmuch that I've made a horrible decision. And this was with a $100 amazon gift card, so it's not like I could have even spent it somewhere else! Wholly different from your current situation, but still, when you're normally on beans and rice, buying anything extra can feel wrong.

Even though I'm not on DR, I know the feeling.

It's taken a few years of earning good money and feeling like we're secure before I've finally decided we need to spend some instead of hoarding all of it.

I find it much easier to spend a lot of money on something like the house or travel than blowing $40 on a humidifier, even if we need it.  I think it's because the bigger things can be budgeted, saved for, and accounted for before we ever pull the trigger.  The $40 purchases just feel like I'm frittering money away.

I still struggle with it, and next year we are going to do multiple sinking funds so that it's not as difficult for us to pull the trigger when a good deal rolls around.  I think we will add sinking funds for clothes, gifts, and home decor in addition to the one for annual dues.  We won't be adding much to those each month, but it will be something.  I think that will make us more willing to jump when a good deal rolls around.  We will be treating those things in the same way we treat trips and home remodeling - save first, and then the money is there when we are ready to spend instead of trying to make it work and cash flow good deals.

    Yes! So much this.

I've been making a little extra cash with some small side gigs. Last week, I had more than $100 and couldn't think of anything I wanted badly enough, so I just sent it to mortgage principle. Peace of mind, experiences and security are worth so much more to me than stuff!!

Makes sense to me! But if I sell something to plato's closet or on a local swap page, DH gets a little uncomfortable if I don't spend at least some of the money on just me. He will sell things to pay for golf outings with friends and it makes him uncomfortable if I use extra money towards debt (which is entirely made up of his student loans). I can get away with using my extra cash for drinks or apps or something if we are out with friends and would normally just sip water. But I don't want to make him feel guilty for spending his extra on a social event when we really do have a bare bones budget and send 49% income to SLs each month. Before we met, DH assumed he'd be paying down loans for decades, so a little golf trip here or there that he pays for with local sales proceeds is just fine in my books!
  • I don't even do the dave ramsey plan and I don't like spending money unless we need to.  I needed some hair product and a cute pair of yoga shorts, but neither are lightening deals.  oh well.

OMG yes!  Things are so so much different now.  We just went from rice and beans, baby step #2, to being on baby step #7 and "living and giving like nobody else."  It's really hard to wrap our minds around.  There are so many things we've been wanting and needing that we've just been putting off while paying off debt.
Right now we're just cash flowing things we've been needing, out of our regular month to month budget.  I don't want to touch the money for just "spending."
So for now I'll continue to vacuum the dog hair every day, and we're using our craptastic dining room set until we get to the month where it will come out of our regular budget.  That rice and beans mindset doesn't just go away.

Sidenote:  I've told my H that we really need to read The Legacy Journey now.  Neither one of us know what we're supposed to do now.  We have goals set for moving up in house, traveling, upgrading cars, etc.  But what do we focus on now?

Thanks, I didn't see any of my wishlist items as lightening deals while I was looking, I was hoping we might snag either a stroller or jogger (we're hoping to have both so we have one to run with and one that packs up nicely in the car) but didn't see any of the ones H and I had looked at and agreed on.

This is completely unrelated and I'm sorry for hi-jacking the thread, but how hard is it to sew? I've been considering getting a sewing machine to hem my pants and make throw pillows. I have ZERO experience (and I suck at crafts) but at 5' 1" basically any pair of pants I buy needs a good hem, so I thought in the long run it might save me money. I thought about buying a decent but cheaper one and practicing on consignment shop/good will pants.

if you're crafty it's not too bad, in that case I'd go for a machine with more features and options, because eventually you'll want them (I have a mid-line heavy duty Singer). If you're not super crafty, you can still learn some basics, YouTube is a great source, but in that case go for a pretty basic machine so there aren't a lot of settings to balance, Singer is still a great brand.

ETA: I also find that some of the women (or potentially men) who work at JoAnn's can be very helpful with fabric selection and project help.

Anything with a straight line is pretty easy - hems, throw pillows, etc. The trick is to pin the pants hem in place and iron it to give you a crease so that you're just tacking down the extra fabric.

Pillows can be a bit harder, but still not so bad.  My big screw up with pillows is not cutting enough fabric to give myself a nice buffer to sew.
