Because you guys will understand

My most favorite bookstore in the world lost their lease and is closing forever. :(  My mother and I made sure to squeeze in a trip this weekend. (It's about 50 minutes away at the coast.) I just can't with the lack of bookstores anymore. The closest B&N is even 30 minutes away, and I do NOT live in the boondocks.

  • We just had our favorite used book store close.  J likes obscure old car books and this place was swimming with them.  He's actually more devastated than I am.  It's horrible to see local bookstores close.

  • Oh no! That sucks! Same thing happened here. Closest B&N is about 45 minutes away. Sadly. there is not a single bookstore in my entire county. We had a small independent bookstore recently close.

  • It's the worst. And it was sudden! We got an email on Saturday that Wednesday will be their last day. Boo hiss.

  • Our nearest Barnes and Noble is about 20 min away and it is in the mall and a pain to get in and out of. It makes me sad.

  • I agree there's really nothing in my area other than B&N which can be expensive. It's sad that used bookstores are becoming a thing of the past, I still love paper books.

You could try good will/salvation army etc. Not sure what the selection would be like but we get things in the mail all the time asking for clothes and books/cds donations.

Our used store went out of business and I was so sad.

Our thrift stores are treasure troves of used books.  They're not organized, so it takes some hunting, and aren't good if you're looking for a particular book.  My favorite one is typically 25 cents for paperbacks and kids books, 50 cents for hardbacks, and every once in a while they have a sale where it's $1 for all you can put in a bag.

But I'm guilty for not shopping at my indy bookstore but downloading books onto my Kindle or buying online, and most of the kids' books are ordered from Scholastic through their schools.  I bought some Christmas gifts last year from the indy store, and while they were lovely to us and wrapped everything deliciously, it was expensive and small and hard to find parking.  :(

  • That sucks.

We don't have a used bookstore here either, so I'm all about thrift stores and library sales.

  • Thankfully, my favorite used bookstore is still around. This one was new books, but I still loved it!

  • That's so sad. I loooooove browsing bookstores. Scrolling through Amazon is just not the same.
I write sexy books. I read all the books. I love dresses & macarons.

It is really not. I love looking at the cover, turning it over and reading the back, and then flipping through the pages.

    And smelling the pages!

  • Oh the smell of books!

I know you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover or title, but I find more of a draw when I can see the cover and title
  • I won't discount a book based on a cover, but I am drawn to a good cover and even the feel of a book. This is why I can't be exclusively a Kindle user.

This is how I am. I will look at covers and interesting ones will get me to pick up a book and check out the back.
