A Discovery of Witches (NS)

I know these threads can be annoying, and I apologize for that, but am I going to like this book?

It's a pretty hefty audiobook (like, 20 CDs or so), and I'm hesitant to commit.  I'm maybe 1/2 an hour into it right now and I'm not so sure.

I sometimes enjoy PNF (that's what you'd call this, right?), when it's really good.  I LOVED the Seven Realms series and I'm into the Raven Boys, but I didn't care for the Grisha.  Incidentally, I listened to all three of those series (well, only the first Grisha, because I didn't love it).

Advice?

Re: A Discovery of Witches (NS)

  • I couldn't get through the first book, but that's me.

Of the series you mentioned, Grisha was my least favorite.

I wouldn't compare it really to any of those series.  I didn't love it personally, but I didn't hate it either.  I'm taking my sweet time getting to number two.

Was it @dmlk413 that was really into them?  Maybe @Fabk ?  They might have some more insight.  It felt a little like historical fiction with some fantasy thrown in.  It wasn't like BOOM! Witches or anything.

    @SnShne322 -

I literally just LOLed at "BOOM! Witches"

I like historic fiction.  What was that giant historic fiction book about Dracula's descendants or something?  Maybe the author's name was Kostova or something like that?
ETA: The Historian.  Thanks, Google.  I liked that one okay.

The Historian.  It reminds me A LOT more of that then the other series you mentioned.

I love PNR and over the top vampire/witch/werewolfe fantasy; they have their place.  But sometimes it's so in your face.  This ones more subtle, less boom :)

Okay, cool.  I have a long drive with a baby this weekend, so I'm psyched to get a bunch of audiobook time in while he's napping in the car.  I guess I'll stick with this one.
  • I actually really enjoyed this series, and am not typically an historical fiction fan, and not a huge PNR fan, but I do love some. I read the first two and listened to the third and really enjoyed the narrator.

  • I like both historic fiction and PNR and really liked this series. If I remember correctly, it did take a little while to get into the first one but once the story got moving, I was hooked.

  • I really liked this series!  I agree that this series probably falls in the historical fiction and PNR category.  I enjoy both.  I read all three books.  I have a hard time with audiobooks.  Just can't get into them.

    BUT THE DARKLING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I read Books 1 and 2 of Discovery of Witches.  Started book 3 and had no idea what the hell was going on.  I put it back on the shelf.  I don't know if I will ever try to pick it up ever again.

I wound up liking the series overall but Diana REALLY annoyed me in the first book.

  • I did enjoy these books but there was a really strong historical component in addition to all of the paranormal stuff which is why I liked it so much.

I frickin loved these books. It was historical fiction plus academia plus witches/supernatural. It's the trifecta of sassypants' passions!

  • I am glad you posted this. I have been recommended this book so many times and yet I have never actually gotten to it. Maybe I will get it on audio so I can listen to it here at work at my desk.

I really enjoyed this series.  Book One was the weakest of the three though IMO.  Took awhile for things to really get going.

  • Update: I'm on disc 4 or 5 now (of 20), and I like it so far.  I like that it's not all BOOM! Witches.  And I like the narrator, but I can see where Diana might be kind of an annoying character.
