NBR: Campers

Does anyone have one or care you share their experiences with them?

J is NOT a traveler.  I'm not much of one, but a million times more one that he is.  I'm wondering if a camper is a good idea for those who want to get away without going away.  I really like the idea of camping, but I am NOT outdoorsy.  At all.  I think it could be a great compromise.  I'd also really like to be able to take Wes places and experience new things and meet new people since traveling much is not in the cards.

I'd really love to hear people's experiences with them.

This may be a stupid question, but I'll ask anyway.  We have an 11 year old cat.  Not ancient by any stretch, and she's an active indoor cat.  Do you take them with you? I know people take dogs, but I don't like the idea of leaving her for weekends in the summer. One or two, fine, but if we would make the most out of the camper, I don't know that I'd like leaving her home.  The people close to us who could check on her would be gone intermittently like we would be, so it could be difficult to find someone to reliable check on her.

We like camping. We went cabin camping a couple of weeks ago. We brought everything we would have except the tent.

Try renting an RV and seeing how it would work for you. Where we went, people were there with everything including satellite tv.

    Excellent suggestion @RevJen.

I just love the idea of J and Wes going fishing and cooking over a fire some nights and befriending neighbors while having my own "home" with a shower, a bed, privacy and NO BUGS.

And yep, I need to make sure this place has Wifi ;)

  • I agree with Rev about renting before you invest in something like this.  Especially given that you said you're not outdoorsy at all.  Because even if you have a camper, you're still camping.  Like, in the woods and stuff.  ;)

  • Truth @SusieBW.  I like campfires and laying out in the sun along with a little fishing, but that's really as outdoorsy as I get. I just really, really hate spiders and other gross bugs.

  • I agree with Rev.  When I was in high school we would spend a week at the lake every summer.  My step-mom would rent a camper so that we had some amenities and the kids slept in tents.  It was the best of both worlds.

We do state parks generally but there are some nice KOAs. Kamp grounds of America. I hate the spelling.

  • We use our ILs pop-up camper a good bit. It's got 2 Queen beds, a stove top, a sink, toilet/shower, and AC/heat. I've camped in a tent once in my life and NEVER AGAIN. It's not for me. But the camper is nice, especially with kids. The camper has all of the kitchen stuff we'd need, so we just pack food, drinks, clothes, towels, toiletries, and a few things to entertain the kids in case it rains. My only complaint is that I feel like we always end up taking too much stuff, and I feel crammed after a few days.

  • We just got back from our camping trip. We rented a cabin (with electric, A/C and a mini-fridge) but tons of folks in DH's family have campers, including his cousin who we camp with every year. They have 2 kids and get a lot of use out of their camper. I would highly suggest renting one first. They aren't cheap so you would want to make sure you enjoy it and would get enough use out of it to justify the cost. There is some maintenance and general know-how that will be helpful. They got one because his wife isn't super-outdoorsy, even though he is.
