Weekend Reading

What did you start, finish, make progress on, or neglect this weekend?

Any fun stories to share?

Re: Weekend Reading

  • Mostly I just neglected things in favor of playing with the kids, who are still here for another week.  Their other grandparents came to visit on Saturday, so I tried to do some catching up then.  I finished Smoke Gets In Your Eyes: Tales from the Crematory (it was amazing) and started a book about school shooters and one about a sea monster.

I read most of Pines by Blake Crouch this weekend.  It's book 1 of the Wayward Pines trilogy that the TV show is based on, and I really like it.  DH was away Saturday night, so once the kids were in bed, I sat out on the deck with a blanket, a cocktail and my book.  It was divine.  Eventually the lights shut off on me (they're on a timer) and I was sitting there in the dark, so I figured that was time to go in and go to read in bed.

I also managed to get in a few more discs of A Discovery of Witches, between running errands after the kids were in bed Thursday night, sitting in Folk Fest traffic Friday (DH read his kindle, so I listened to my book), and running more kid-free errands Saturday morning, I actually got a bunch of car audiobook time in, which is rare for me on a weekend.
  • I finished "Wild" by Cheryl Strayed and read just a few more pages on Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.

I went to a book signing of one of my favorite college professors (and my very first book signing ever). It was awesome, a bunch of alumni went to geek out and support her. I have to make the shameless plug since we had some threads about dark books and school shootings, her new book is called "Dancing in Red Shoes will Kill You" by Donna Decker. It's about a college shooting in Canada in 1989. She did so much research she now teaches a class on school shootings and books related to it. Disclaimer, she's an English and Women's Studies instructor so the focus is more on the women and how they were discriminated again in Engineering.

The idea of a day with the nieces and nephews followed by a drink on the deck with a book sounds like heaven!
  • Finished Fifty Shades.
read about 115 pages of Missoula which is mind blowing.
Started What Alice Forgot while we were at the park yesterday.

I picked up Ugly Love from the Library too.

  • I finished 'An Immortal Descent' and started both 'The Chalice' and 'The End of Tsarist Russia'.

  • Started Ravensbruck by Sarah Helm.  It's gigantic and is going to take me forever.  It's interesting but very heavy.  I've broken it down to 30 pages a day to finish it before it's due.

Also started Serafina and the Black Cloak by Robert Beatty.  It should be a quick read but my brain is not focusing.

  • I finally finished Wild Storm by Richard Castle. Instead of finishing Deadly Heat, I started Call After Midnight by Tess Gerritsen.

It took me FOREVER and a day to read Ravensbruck but it was so good.  I learned so much and it felt like reading a novel, but her research is impeccable.
