Genre Kryptonite

Which genres are you helpless to resist?

Mine would be anything about cults, school shootings, sea creatures, evil children/nannies, fantasy covers where someone is wearing a cloak, and pop feminism

What are automatic turn offs?

Mine are: middle age white man problems (AKA Jonathan Franzen anything), teacher-student romance, and anything with an American West setting

That bold one is my favorite of yours; it made me giggle for some reason.  ;)

I'm not nearly so strict, and will give most things at least a chance.  Usually I walk away from Sci-fi and romance, though.  If it's recommended, I'll still give it a shot, but those bodice-ripping covers are almost always an immediate turn-off for me.

I want to read all the addiction and rock n roll autobiographies, though.  Especially if they're one and the same.  And mental illness memoirs fascinate me, too.  Mary Forsberg's book (Fall to Pieces) about being married to Scott Weiland was a trifecta for me.

Also, a confession: I just googled whether the appropriate phrase is "one and the same" or "one in the same."
  • I have been proven wrong so many times when I say I don't read a particular genre because some of the recommendations that have been made on here have been absolutely nothing I would have picked up before, but decided to anyway, and loved them.
That being said--I don't like cheap romance novels. (Harlequin type)  Hate them.  They are so corny and predictable and there is no "turns or surprises" in ANY of them.
I don't like middle age white man problems either.  And I don't like books that have pets that die in them.  Like ever.

I love funny books, witty, or sarcastic books, aka Jennifer Lancaster. I also love mysteries, sci-fi, YA, and anything with a kick a$$ lead female.

I generally avoid biographies and autobiographies. Also not a huge fan of dystopia works.

I am helpless to resist anything that talks about witches, dragons, or baking on the cover of the book.

Read: YA Romance. Plus I agree on school shootings

Avoid:Science fiction usually. I will read it if it gets good enough reviews, but it takes some convincing.

Ditto school shootings. Also dystopian/post apocalyptic or natural disaster. I love mysteries, YA in general, some romance

  • Which genres are you helpless to resist?
That's a good one. I tend to binge on authors rather than a particular genre (although, ok, they tend to be in the same genres).

    What are automatic turn offs?
Infidelity, white male privilege, anything with sad pet stories, bodice rippers. I also avoid any punny covers (Worth the Weight is one I saw listed for free on Book Bub recently) because I figure if they resort to bad puns on the cover they probably aren't any better on the inside. Oh and those that are clearly trying to capitalize on a trend (Romancing the Billionaire Duke Vampire Highlander, that sort of thing). Pass.

  • Which genres are you helpless to resist? Historical fiction and any non-fiction about shipwrecks (???? no idea why this fascinates me so much).

What are automatic turn offs?  Cheating, oh-woe-is-me-teenagers, most fantasy and sci-fi

  • I'll read pretty much anything, unless there are animals dying in it. Racing In The Rain is the only exception to that rule.I loved that one.

    I do this too.

  • I'm a sucker for anything Paranormal and Urban Fantasy.

I avoid almost all animal books.  Where the Red Fern goes ruined them for me.  Then I stupidly watched Marley and Me.  NEVER AGAIN.

  • Which genres are you helpless to resist?  I love almost everything.  For non-fiction, I love any kind of disaster/survival/mass destruction/death/serial killers type stuff.  All kinds of history (wars, westward expansion, mobsters, pioneers, etc).  I also like books about food and health related stuff.  I love stuff about diseases and pandemics too.

As for non fiction I will read pretty much anything too.  I don't mind death of children, I don't mind infidelity, I don't mind diseases, I don't mind blood and guts.

What are automatic turn offs?  The fairy tale (everything is perfect and we live happily ever after and nothing bad every happens once we find each other) type book.

And I don't read any books that are based around an animal because the book always ends with the animals death and I can't.  I just can't.

  • Which genres are you helpless to resist? I can't seem to get away from historical fiction, I will read just about anything if it's historical.  I will also read most anything that's about Russia (with the exception of a few authors).

What are automatic turn offs?  Anything with Mr. Darcy in the title!  Science fiction (for the most part) and high fantasy.

  • Which genres are you helpless to resist?
This is shallow but I can't seem to resist a good New Adult book with a tatted-up guy on the cover. This has burned me many times over though. Any book with a map included is usually a good pick for me. I like Paranormal, Fantasy, you name it. I like books with at least a touch of supernatural, like Sarah Addison Allen's books. I read to escape reality so I think that is why I prefer paranormal or fantasy type books.

    What are automatic turn offs?
Alzheimer's or dementia of any kind, sexual abuse. No Harlequin type romances for me either. I don't care for true crime books either.

Which genres are you helpless to resist?

Non-fiction: any Malcolm Gladwell-esque pop psychology is something I love. Also anything with the intersection of brain function and social behavior like Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman's books and Susan Cain's Quiet

Fiction: My go-to genre is fantasy, particularly YA fantasy that's out of the usual mold like anything of Laini Taylor's, Maggie Stiefvater's Raven Boys series and The Scorpio Races, and Rae Carson's Girl of Fire and Thorns series. Any clever twist on a Shakespeare or fairytale retelling usually get my attention too (like Seanan Maguire's Indexing) and anything with tarot mythology. I also like sci-fi, particularly if it's a more comedic sci-fi with a healthy dose of romance.

I actually love to be surprised by a genre or subject matter I thought I'd hate though, so I'll try almost anything.

    What are automatic turn offs?
Plotlines that involve cheating by characters I'm supposed to like. Incest, death of children, depressing portrait of a marriage in the suburbs, those are also things that make me go meh. Recently I've come to love small town contemporary romance (Kristan Higgins is pretty much perfection), but I don't really go for romances with billionaires and ingenues, or ones with titles like Christmas with Her Secret Baby. I'm kind of sick of medieval type fantasy and angsty teen paranormals too.

I'm helpless to resist biographies about figures of the American or French Revolutions. And John Quincy Adams. More recently, YA fantasy.

I avoid: white dude stories. women's fiction w/ cheating. Kidnapping, especially little kids. Stories about firefighters/medics that die. Stories where the main characters are super animal lovers/the animal plays a big part in the story. (Ex: A handful of Dean Koontz recent stories involve dogs b/c of his own dog love). Horror.

Ugh, same here! I don't mind rock stars or actors (as long as they aren't total d-bags) but a business tycoon just doesn't do it for me.

Tarot plays a big part, I don't think it's mentioned in the descriptions. But I thought of it when I read your response.
