My CC was compromised

Just a PSA to remind everybody to check their credit card and bank accounts regularly.  Last night somebody tried to charge $1000+ on my Chase Freedom card at an online pet store of all places.

Thankfully, Chase declined the transaction and emailed/texted me to see if it was an authorized purchase.  I said no, and they locked down the account before any further activity could take place.  They are overnighting me a new card with new account number.

I'm not sure where the card was compromised - we didn't take it with us to Europe, and it's still in my wallet.  My guess is it was probably skimmed at a restaurant, because that was the bonus category last quarter.  Restaurant skimming is very common.

Re: My CC was compromised

  • Bummer! I've never had it happen but when H had a Bank of America card it happened at least every six months. What a pain!!

  • That stinks, but at least it was caught quickly before they could really get anything from the account. Good reminder to keep an eye on our accounts. :)
  • Good catch! before I had a credit card this happened to my debit card account and someone charged $3000 at an upscale grocery store in the UK...the bank never notified me and it took two months to get everything cleared up.

This has happened twice on my visa card, the card company says scammers have computers running combinations of numbers/expiration dates/CCV codes and that's how they sometimes end-up with your CC number, so it may not have been anything you did. I got a phone call within hours of the charges and they had my account frozen and new cards sent to me with in minutes of getting me on the phone.

  • I had my Chase Freedom compromised.  Somebody went shopping with my card in the next state over.  Called Chase and they had blocked most of them, but missed the one I had noticed.  They added it to the list and also re-issued my cards.

  • Earlier this summer my VISA was compromised. Someone tried buying $1100.00 at an online clothing store. My bank called me. They had blocked the purchase and once confirmed did the same - froze the account and gave me a new card/number.

  • That happened to me with my business debit card, literally about 2 weeks after I opened the account. I had only used the card at the ATM, so it weirded me out. Whoever it was tried to make a small charge at a hotel on the other side of the country. The person I talked to about the charge said sometimes scammers will just "test" numbers by making a small charge, and if it goes through then they'll make a larger purchase.
  • That happened to DH all the time when he was using a local bank. I don't understand how it happened, because the person would make charges at gas stations and liquor stores but DH's card was still in his wallet. It hasn't happened since he changed banks (knock on wood).
  • Ugh. We had our AMEX compromised last month. $400 at Target. It's all fine now. But, when these things happen, they do create little bumps in the road of life.

  • My H's Freedom card was comprised a month or two ago. Thankfully, Chase notified him via text before any damage could be done. the last place he used it was at a nail salon (getting me a giftcard). Love Chase for staying on top of things.
  • Our Chase Freedom had fraudulent charges a couple of weeks ago.  They didn't notify us of them, I actually saw them when reviewing things online.  It then took about 4 days to get the new card...they did not overnight it.
The service related to this incident was disappointing and I am considering leaving this card or downgrading it so we only use it for 5% items.  I have to look into moving to the 2% card I saw the other day.
  • I need to start being more diligent about this.  Thanks for the reminder.
