MM Vent- Stupid Mistake

So it seems like this week is not the week for me MM wise... I keep making dumb, costly mistakes like losing my $200 sunglasses in 20 feet of water and now I made a CC payment that I wanted to post on Friday after pay day, but I forgot to change the date apparently and it came out yesterday resulting in a over draft fee ($30) and negative balance in my checking account.

I'm so frustrated with myself and just needed to vent. I should have a buffer for these kinds of things, but I know how I am and I will slowly (read: quickly) chip away at the buffer making it a waste to keep in my account. Generally I'm pretty good at managing these kinds of things and rarely make these dumb mistakes but this seems to be the way my week is going.

Anyway! Thanks for listening to me vent.

Have you made any silly MM mistakes lately that you need to vent about? :)

Re: MM Vent- Stupid Mistake

  • H and I had a miscommunication about the purchasing of our new windows for our house. I had cleared with the bank that if we paid with a CC and presented the bank with a receipt they would reimburse us directly ($10,000+ for windows would have been at least $100 in rewards points). H misunderstood and got a check cut from the bank and paid the window company directly from the bank...those card points sure would have been nice, we could have paid for half the baby crib. They're the only contractor working on our house that takes payment by CC.

  • I'm sorry :-(  I don't keep a buffer in my checking account for the same reason, and I've had stuff like that happen every couple of years.  Don't beat yourself up about it.

I know this was just a vent, but one thing you might look into: At our bank, we can link our checking account to a savings account for overdraft protection.  Mentally I respect this and don't abuse it, but it's nice for when accidents happen (a payment coming out twice, etc.)  Maybe your bank has a similar program.
  • Aw, that sucks! I've done things like that a few times before. The last mistake I made was I set up a credit card payment twice and put me into the negative for a few days and had 2- $35 overdraft charges...grr, I was so pissed at myself. H took away my checkbook rights for a few weeks after that one LOL.

But yea, the best thing you can do is keep a buffer in case....

  • Did you call them? I always get them to remove the overdraft fees for something rare like that. as long as you are normally a good customer that pays on time/doesn't overdraft then they should remove the charge for you. Just call and ask.

  • I agree with PP, Call and ask them to reimburse you. if it doesnt happen often, they most likley will take it off. I HATE when that stuff happens, especially when you are so used to paying attention and not making tiny mistakes.
  • Thanks everyone for your feedback! I'm going to look into putting a buffer in my savings to pull from if this happens again... I just need to work on my self discipline. And I'm planning to call my bank to see if they'll waive the fee. The worst they can say is no afterall. :)
  • I do this kind of thing more often than I care to admit! Good luck talking with your bank!!

  • Yeah, this type of stuff happens and it is so annoying.
I see it more in little purchases day to day.  Sunday I was leaving my friends house and was going to stop by Aldi on the way home to buy a couple of things for dinner.  I made a wrong turn and started going in the opposite direction so I just went to Target instead.  I figured I'd spend about $1 more so not worth it to turn around.
  • @abrewer5, it's been my experience that most places are willing to waive fees if it's because of something that's generally out of character for you.

oh! I have another one, this has been an ongoing issue. after my CC number was stolen one of our automatic bill pays got screwed up, obviously the old CC number didn't work, but also my resetting our automatic payments didn't "stick". so we went several months through a cycle where we'd get a late notice, I'd call and go online and make the payment and re-set the automatic bill pay, and it still wouldn't stick.  I've paid late fees the last 4 months because this cycle keeps repeating. last time I called customer service I asked them to take me off automatic bill pay and start sending me paper statements...now I'm getting nervous because I've not received a paper statement in the mail yet this month. your story made me think I need to call them and check on what's happening.

  • I was just a few days late with a Capital One CC payment, which means a late charge next month.  It was a CC I though didn't have a balance.  But then I got an e-mail mid last week about a payment being due on 8/1.

Okay, fine, I stop at a branch on Sat. (8/1) at 11AM to pay it off.  Except, for some reason, this particular branch is not open on Saturdays like ALL the other ones are.  Argh!   I meant to go home and pay it over the phone, but I had a rental open house I was getting ready for and then held that afternoon.  By the time I remembered this payment again, it was late in the evening.  By that time, it was already going to be late so, I decided to just wait until today and go into a branch.
