NBR: Robot Vacuums

In my quest to clean as little as possible, I have been researching robot vacuums. Do any of you have one? Would you recommend it?

Re: NBR: Robot Vacuums

  • My sister has a Roomba and loves it.  I have a Dyson, which I like, but I like that you can set your Roomba do vacuum once a day (or whenever you want, I think)  I will definitely be investigating one if/when my Dyson dies.

I think her only gripe is that it gets full a lot.  She has 3 cats and 2 dogs; all long haired except for one dog.  I'm fairly confident she told me that it runs daily and often gets full and just returns to the base without finishing.  Maybe someone else can weigh in on that.  I really can't imagine it would get full each day like that, but I've never actually seen it in action.

Come to think of it, my brother has one as well, but has had no complaints on about hair.  They have 2 cats.

  • We have a Roomba.  We got it when DD was a baby.  DH does the vacuuming and doesn't do it frequently enough for my liking but it was near impossible for me to vacuum with the dog and a kid.  So the Roomba it was.  We use it for "in between" vacuums.  I used to have it run every morning but I've been slacking at that lately.  It's nice for a "oh crap.  Someone is coming over and we haven't vacuumed.  Start the Roomba!"

I don't think it works as well as our Dyson but it's great for a quick job.  We had a German Shepherd who shed like mad and it did okay picking up the hair.

You're only supposed to do one room at a time so if you want the whole house done, that would take a while with charging/whatnot.

I think our small handheld Dyson does a much better job on our tile than the Roomba.  The Roomba could take an hour to do the front hall and kitchen when I could use the small vac and finish in 5 minutes.

We bought ours from Bed, Bath and Beyond with a 20% coupon with the guarantee we could return it if we didn't like it, which was nice.

  • We had one a few years ago. My H bought it when he was a bachelor and it lasted about five years. The thing to go was the battery and our older model made it difficult to justify the cost of the replacement.

I really liked it and if we buy a place again, I would buy another. I loved being able to kick it off before leaving and coming home to a freshly vacuumed space. That said, we don't have any pets or a Dyson, so I can't comment on how it works with or compare to those.

  • I got a secondhand Samsung Navibot from a friend who got tired of fishing it out of places that it got stuck. It did get stuck on stuff in my apartment, so I'd come home and find it in random places. I still needed to vacuum once in a while, but I loved having a slightly cleaner floor everyday. Eventually the battery died, and I miss it. My boyfriend has a Roomba that can climb over extension cords and rarely gets stuck, so I probably won't replace mine since we'll eventually cohabitate.

  • Thanks for the responses! I ended up ordering a Neato XV-21. It looks like an old Nintendo, but got a lot of good reviews. It has a 90 day return policy, so I figured it couldn't hurt to try this one out. I can't wait to try it out and really hope that my dog doesn't try to attack it.
