WWGPD?

Disclaimer:  I am super impatient.

DH and I have been trying since 08/13, with some breaks.  On our most recent streak of trying, I temped last cycle and got dashed cross hairs on CD14 but our timing was off.  I've been temping this cycle as well, it's CD19 but so far nothing.  Never gotten a +OPK, but I do think I must ovulate at some point because my periods definitely seem like more than breakthrough bleeding... cramps, at least a day being heavy.  I didn't temp much before before last cycle because our cat is an asshole who liked to wake us up at random times between 3 and 5 in the morning (we've changed his feeding schedule so now he doesn't try to do this until after I've already taken my temp for the day).

I have also been diagnosed with PCOS, and DH and I are basically playing chicken on making an appointment with an RE.  Should I wait, now that I can temp regularly, to see how my cycles pan out for a bit?  Should I make an appointment for after this cycle and keep or cancel based on if I O or not?  On the one hand I feel like more data would be good, but on the other I am tired of waiting.

  • I would make the appointment, but I'm impatient too. I've never regretted moving forward, but I have regretted the waiting game.

  • So sorry you are having to face this decision.

I second what Vino said. I regretted how long we waited to see an RE. Also it can sometimes take time to get that first appt. and you can always cancel if you change your mind.

  • You will feel so much better after visiting with the RE.  I wished we would have made the jump sooner.  It's scary as hell to "admit defeat" in making that call....but I don't regret it one bit.

  • I had talked to DH a couple nights ago about making an appointment and he said we probably should, but when I asked if he was okay with me doing it today he backed down.  So... it looks like I'm still going to be temping it out until next summer.  (Though I did get him to agree that if it looked like I wasn't ovulating that we definitely need to make an appointment.)

I don't know how I feel about this yet.

  • Sorry you are in this position! I would try to compromise with H and temp for 2-3 more cycles. If no ovulation, then I would call the RE.

  • Just because you have regular periods, does not mean you ovulate.

My husband was not comfortable with going to an RE right away, so I started out with some basic testing with my OB. It was after 2 years of ttc that we decided to make an appointment with an RE.

What did you do through your OB?  When I've talked to mine, and mentioned I wasn't sure if I was ovulating, she was like "Well, let me know if you want to do a clomid cycle!"  She also doesn't monitor medicated cycles unless I were to specifically request to do so (which I would).  I guess I'm not the most comfortable from what I've seen of her approach.

  • If you're both ready, then make the appointment.

If I were to go back and do it over again, I wouldn't have messed with the OB.  He didn't monitor our clomid cycle properly, even though I asked and insisted.  We won't waste our time with the OB next time, and will head straight to the RE.

However, definitely continue to temp consistently and see if you truly are Oing.

DO NOT DO MEDICATED (Clomid) CYCLES WITH YOUR OB.

Clomid is a great option for infertility treatments, but there are a lot of risks that can easily be managed/monitored by an RE.  Most OBs hand out Clomid like candy and it can permanently damage your future fertility.

Clomid can reduce the thickness of your uterine lining (which can affect implantation) and if you don't keep an eye on it it can be a permanent issue.

You also need to be monitored to see how you respond to Clomid, if you over respond you can end up with higher order multiples, cysts on your ovaries and other issues.  The dosage is different for everyone so you need to be monitored.

I just started my first Clomid cycle (tonight is dose 4 of 5).  I went in on CD3 for a baseline ultrasound (vaginal ultrasound) to check my ovaries and lining.  I will go in Wednesday for another internal ultrasound to check to see if/how I am responding.  I will also go in 7DPO to do a progesterone blood draw to make sure that I ovulated (assuming I'm responding well to the Clomid).  Depending on when you last had CD3 blood work, you may also need blood work done when they do the baseline ultrasound.

I would go ahead and make the appointment with the RE.  You can always cancel if you aren't ready.  We also waited two months between our first appointment where we received our recommended protocol and when we decided we were ready to start treatment.

    Good luck!

ETA: The makers of Clomid also recommend that you only do 6 TOTAL cycles of Clomid.  Repeated use (more than 6 cycles) can contribute to permanently damaged fertility.  Another reason to make sure that you are monitored correctly so that you aren't responding to Clomid they can put you on a different medication.

  • I did unmonitored Clomid cycles with my OB. I was fine, but really have no idea how I responded because there was no monitoring. I didn't get pregnant.

But there are horror stories. There is a GP oldie who got pregnant with 4 babies because she wasn't monitored. Not a cute situation to be in.
