Any husbands have PPD?

J had depression prior to meeting me.  He has done counseling and medication.  Counseling was ok.  He has been through lots of med changes with drs due to side effects or it working.  Well the past couple months his depression has been ok but his anxiety has increased.  The dr is working with him to get balanced out.  Last week, he was good.  This weekend, he was ok.  I thought he was just tired.

today, I think PPD for dads.

Experience with this anyone?

Re: Any husbands have PPD?

  • It's possible. A new baby can be a huge cause for anxiety. He could also just be adjusting and dealing with lack of sleep. The first few weeks are rough for both parents.

  • I'm with Am on this.  I suffered from a condition known as "lack of sleep".

Is it possible with his medications that the lack of sleep is messing with it in some way?

  • Looking back I wondered if P had that. But I think it's more what Am and Mark are saying. It's a huge adjustment with a big lack of sleep. I think it's a bigger adjustment for dads because they knew we were pregnant but they didn't have symptoms and body changes to help them adjust.

  • I just wanted to say that I am thinking of you guys. Ty has really bad anxiety and is currently on medication as well. I hope it gets better.

  • We went through adjustments each time. It's life changing.
  • And the unknown is scary... Which can cause anxiety.
  • You guys are so smart.

I let him have a night off to sleep through the night.  He is a whole new person.  I wasn't sure he was going to make it to be honest.  He talked about resenting her and all these "what ifs".  I know he felt really guilty about sleeping but I told him that it was practice for when he goes back to work on Monday.

  • I'm glad the extra sleep helped. I noticed that I still have rough days if I don't get enough sleep. It is amazing what a good nights sleep can do to improve your mood.

  • The first few months?  I haven't had a solid night's sleep since last November. :P

  • Of the things I'm worried about in becoming a parent, sleep is one of them. I can't sleep now. I was awake for three hours the other night just because of a thunderstorm that lasted 15 minutes. I live in exhaustion now, because it takes me at least an hour after I go to bed to fall asleep.

I don't know why I turned this into a rant. Sorry. I'm just frustrated right now, cause I've been in bed for at least an hour now. I've tried to fall asleep. Which is why I ended up on here.

I hear ya! I haven't had a good night's sleep since May 28, 2103! Liliana still doesn't sleep through the night!

Married the love of my life on 1-21-12. Our princess arrived on 5-28-13.

  • I was worried about sleep too.  J gets really sick when he doesn't sleep well, so I know he was worried.  He still is.  Right now she is giving us 4 hours before the first feeding, and 3-4 hours before the morning feeding.  I think that is pretty good, but I would love to have one night straight through.

When she isn't crying, she certainly makes everything worth it.
  • Consider yourself lucky if that's all she wakes up.  Ryan used to wake up every hour on the hour at first....

  • That's awesome Jen! Lily woke up more than that in those first months. Then she drifted to twice a night and finally once in the middle. We had random nights she would sleep through before weaning. Now that we weaned, it's much more common for her to sleep through. She woke up last night at 3:30ish but it was the first night in a week. I'm waking up multiple times due to pregnancy. Ha ha, go figure.
