Re: Happy Friday!

  • I'm finishing up The Selection on audio today.  I don't love it, but it's been a cute, quick listen. #61

I'm reading In Your Dreams (Blue Heron #4)  I'll probably finish it this weekend. #62.

I should be back on track with my reading goal of 100 today when I finish The Selection! To answer your question beyond re reads, my favorite book so far this year was 11/22/63.

  • I am about 5 chapters in The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. I am hoping to make serious headway this weekend.
  • I have 3 going because one had a hold so I couldn't renew.

    1. Isla and the Happily Ever After- Stephanie Perkins. I am about half way through and so far I like it. It isn't Anna, but it is good.

    2. Ugly Love-Colleen Hoover. Half way through and I love it. I want to take it out right now at work and read it.

    3. The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight- Jennifer Smith. I am only 2 chapters in so not much of an opinion yet. It is my kindle book.

Favorite book this year: Probably Big Little Lies or Saint Anything

I really liked this one.  I blew through it, but it was just such a sweet little book.

I'm listening to Dead Wake by Erik Larsson, about the final crossing of the Lusitania.  The narrator is a bit, I don't know, dry?  but also overdramatic, if that is possible?  His voice is kind of monotone, but the tone is really high-drama, like movie-phone guy.  I'm nearing the end of disc 1, and it's starting to grow on me, though.  The book is fascinating, even this early on.

I *think* I'm reading Defy by Sara Larson (weird, I didn't realize the authors of my two books have the same last name), but I'm just 4% into it and I started it at bedtime last night and promptly fell asleep.  So far it wasn't really doing it for me, but I'm going to keep going unless a new hold from the library becomes available before I leave for vacation tonight.  (Because Burn for Me is the next hold that should be coming up)

My favorite so far this year - this is tough, I've read a lot of good ones - either The Martian or Sharp Objects.  I can't pick.
  • I am reading Heir of Fire (Throne of Glass, #3).  It's starting off slow, but I can't wait to get into it.

I think my favorite book thus far has been The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah.

  • I'm reading The Steel Queen and listening to an old favorite.

Favorite of the year has been The Martian.

    My favorite Cake Wreck ever.

  • Still working of The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley

Also still working on The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult (for IRL bookclub)

And I am also reading Contagious: Why Things Catch On by Jonah Berger.

I am not thrilled with any of these books.

My favorite this year by far was The Fiery Cross (Outlander #5)  LOVE LOVE LOVE
    90 books in 2015?

  • Currently Reading:

An ARC of Goddess Rising, which I'm enjoying a lot. It's the prequel of Complicated Creatures.

I'm also loving the hell out of A Court of Thorns and Roses.

I have three this year so far that I've rated 5 stars:

The 5th Wave A YA Sci-Fi/Dystopian novel that surprised me

Chime  A unique YA fantasy that's a weird mixture of The Handmaiden's Tale and a Neil Gaiman novel

Burn for Me  A GREAT Urban Fantasy

  • Currently reading: Schismatrix Plus, classic Sci-Fi recommended and loaned to me by a local friend who has an extensive collection.

Currently listening to: How Star Wars Conquered the Universe, which is described as a "biography" of the Star Wars franchise.

Best book of the year so far has to be Night by Ellie Wiesel, because it's so poignant. I hadn't read it before, but I wish I had. Second place goes to Cockpit Confidential, a not-all-juicy behind-the-scenes look at the airline industry. I'm a bit of an avgeek, and I love planes and air travel, so I found the whole thing completely fascinating.

  • Listening to The Melody Lingers On by Mary Higgins Clark.  It's boring as hell.

Re-reading Smooth Talking Stranger by Lisa Kleypas (Travis series #3) because I just got the 4th book today.  If you like contemporary romance, check out this series.  @Jen748 can attest.

  • I am so glad to see The Nightingale on here as a favorite. I have that as my next book.

  • I'm currently reading book 3 of the Wayward Pines series.  I should finish tonight.  It's been enjoyable.  Reminds me of Wool but not as tedious.  I'm ready to finish and move on to something else though.

Best book of the year so far:  Hm.  I don't know if I can choose.  The Nightingale was amazing.  In the Unlikely Event and The Yellow Crocus are also contenders.

  • I'm reading The Rosie Effect and am nearly finished with it. Not sure what to read next.

My favorite book for the year so far is probably Still Alice, even though it was depressing. It was really well written. I have the movie at home from Netflix right now but I haven't watched it yet.

  • I am reading Darkness Unbound, which the is UF pick for the month. It's been good so far, kind of like a cross between Kate Daniels and maybe Women of the Otherworld.

I was about two thirds through Seveneves, which up until that point I thought would be the best book for the year, when it flipped to just being okay and finished out that way as well. So, I agree with @booneybear and have to say The Fiery Cross wins for me so far.

I'm so happy to see so many fans of The Martian though, because I loved that one.

That's been recommended to me but I haven't picked it up yet. I saw the trailer for the film the other day, though, and now I am intrigued yet again.

I just finished Waiting on You (Blue Heron #3) by Kristan Higgins this morning.

I'm also listening to I am Malala (which is really great) and half-heartedly listening to Armada. I almost DNF, but decided to give it another go. It's just hard to suspend my disbelief for this one. I'm not that into video games or aliens unless the author can pull me in with characters I can really feel for or a supercool twist or angle I can get into. None of those things are happening for me here. The 80s pop culture nostalgia worked in Ready Player One because of the whole contest, but in Armada it seems like a big stretch for a millenial to be so entrenched in 80s pop culture just because of his dead father.

I think my favorite book so far this year is The Art of Asking by Amanda Palmer.

I had trouble buying into a lot of the relationships in Armada. They felt too forced to me.
