Talk to Me About Naps and 2 year olds

Hi all! I'm trying to figure out what to do with Abby's naps. She's been going down for her nap closer to 2pm and not being ready for bed until 10 pm or later. I'm wondering if she might be ready to skip the nap. She did ok with not having one yesterday. I tried really hard to give her one, but she had the worst temper tantrum ever, so we ended up passing on it. Today she went to sleep just shy of 2pm and is still sleeping. So talk to me about naps and bedtime.

What time is your toddler up for the day? Do you wake them or let them wake on their own?

What is the latest time you let them nap?

What is the latest time you let them wake up from nap?

What time is bedtime?

Thanks!

Re: Talk to Me About Naps and 2 year olds

  • Liliana naps different times on different days. This summer since I have been home with her I put her down at about 1 and she sleeps until about 2:30. However, if we go somewhere she will sleep in the car on our way home and that will be her nap, even if she only sleeps for 20 minutes. She is starting preschool in 2 weeks and she will be required to sleep from 12:30-2 each day. On the days she is home with my mom hopefully she will nap. This has not happened in the past. She would wait for me to get home (at 2) and nap then, however this year I won't be getting home until 4. This summer I have been letting her sleep until she wakes, which is usually at 7:30. But in 2 weeks, she will have to wake up with me at 6:00 so we can be out the door at 6:30. This will be hard! We currently go to bed at 8 (she still co-sleeps with me, but I am trying to get her used to sleeping in her own room).

  • Lily wakes on her own. It was around 7-7:30 every morning but lately she's been waking at 6:30. Mostly she sleeps in her bed. Occasionally she will come in to us around 3 or 4.

Several months ago she was fighting bedtime so I moved her nap from 1 to 12. It worked for awhile but she's been slowly pushing it back to 1-2. And there have been days she skips her nap. Bedtime has become a hassle again so we decided to let her skip her naps if she is clearly not tired ie) playing, chattering, in a good mood. We will just make her do quiet time.

I anticipate her still needing a nap every other day or every few days. I'm hoping this helps her sleep in. Quiet time yesterday went fairly well for the first day of it. Bedtime was a breeze. And she was still up at 6:30 today. But she was out for her nap at 12:20 in about 5 minutes. We will see how bedtime goes.

  • Thanks ladies! Abby wakes up between 8 and 10 am depending on the kind of night she had. I think that is why nap and bedtime are messed up time wise. I don't really wake her on purpose. I tried to the other day and was very unsuccessful. She just wouldn't wake up until she was ready to about a 1/2 hour later.

  • Ryan has started skipping his second nap of the day.  Although, he's been taking it now that we're all sick.  Goes to sleep around 10 when Joy gets home and wakes up on his own somewhere around 8 or 9 with usually a single waking in the middle of the night.

It seems like Ryan and Abby are on the same schedule. She woke up today around 9. What time does he take his nap when he only takes 1? I like having other kiddos to compare things to.

    Sometime between noon and 1.

  • Caden wakes up anywhere from 6am to 8 am with the average being around 645. He has lunch around 11 and then takes his nap at 12/1230. He will usually nap for 2 hours, on the rare occasion he will nap for 3 hours. He goes to bed at 7. If he goes to bed later he still wakes up at his normal time and is a complete cranky butt the next day.

Some nights he plays in bed for an hour and other nights he crashes instantly. I'm pretty strict with his schedule because he does great when he has a routine.

Most of the time he sleeps through the night but since Emerson has arrived he has wound up in our bed at least 2 to 3 times a week.

  • What time does she go to bed Michelle?

Bedtime was all over the place. When I moved her nap to noon several months ago I also made bed time 8:30. I've tried earlier bedtimes but she will just lay there and play. Even with laying down at 8:30 she is rarely asleep before 9 with some nights closer to 9:30. Last night I had her in bed by 8:30 and she didn't go to sleep until 9:30. This morning she was up at 7. She had a 2 hour nap yesterday.

I honestly have the best luck with bedtime on days that she naps early - say 11:30. But that doesn't happen often.

  • Thanks everyone for your input! Abby laid next to me in bed for maybe 15 mins today and whenever I tried to get her to nap she protested so today we ended up without a nap. We'll see how tonight goes. She needs like 7 hours awake time before she can fall asleep for bedtime. She might just be able to make it without a nap and be fin.

  • Are your kiddos falling asleep in their own bed, being, rocked, or other??

  • Caden falls asleep on his own. It was pretty rough for a few nights getting him to go to sleep on his own though.

  • We used to rock. When we got her twin bed in February, I just lay next to her now. Recently I've been trying to just sit next to her bed but I wondered if that was contributing to her not napping.

  • So today I was determined I was not going to make Abby nap. I took her upstairs to our bedroom with some quiet toys and let her play in there while I read my book in bed. Eventually she got bored and was tired so she laid down next to me. A few minutes later she was asleep. No rocking, no car, no protesting, NOTHING! I thought I would repeat the process tonight for bedtime. It took a while for her to finally fall asleep because she napped until 4 and then we had a thunderstorm, but she fell asleep on her own right next to H who fell asleep soon before her. I am thinking about moving her back to her room. I think I am going to just go with the flow and let her fall asleep when she is ready. I'll take her to quiet/nap time in the afternoon at a certain time and the same for bed time. Why did it take me so  long to stumble upon this?

I nurse (breastfeed) her to sleep. But she naps on her own at the baby sitters house, and when she starts preschool she will have to fall asleep on her own. I may ask the teacher ton give her a bottle of warm milk.

  • That's awesome, Megan.  That's pretty much what we have been doing for the last few months. I just lay down in bed next to Lily and play on my phone or read and let her settle down and fall asleep. Sometimes it takes her an hour and other times it takes her 10 minutes.

We've had two days this week with no nap just quiet time.  The second day she did much better with quiet time and staying in her bed without me there.  But most days she still needs a nap.

  • Today was an absolute disaster. H was in the room with us when she was having quiet time. He ended up getting hungry and left to go downstairs. Abby fell apart after that. He asked me when we were going to stop playing this "game". I asked him not to call it that. He ended up taking her for a quick ride and she went right out. Tomorrow I think it is just going to have to be Abby and I in there. It may too hard for her to settle with us both in there.

  • Lily takes forever to fall asleep when Paul is there. But when he lays with her to nap and I'm not home he said it doesn't take too long. So maybe it's because we are both there?

It could be. Tonight I told H to stay downstairs while I put Abby to bed. She laid down without a problem and was asleep within 30 minutes of laying down. I definitely think two people could be stimulating during the day for nap time. Thursday night H was in the room while I put Abby to bed and the three of us laid in our bed watching and listening to the thunderstorm. H fell asleep before Abby and she fell asleep soon after. No problem.
