WIJFLT: Armada (sp)

I know you're ready to talk about it @sfgiantsjo

I really, really liked it.  Not quite 5 stars, but 4.5.  I loved Zack and Will Wheaton was awesome at narrating.  All the characters were amazing.  I was slightly disappointed in the aliens and their test, but overall, it was well done.  I couldn't get enough of the movie/gaming/music references.

  • I agree exactly. It wasn't quite as wonderful as RP1, but I still loved it. The pop culture references are just awesome, and they are literally everywhere in the book. I feel like the book left a big opportunity for a sequel, as well.

  • I read it on my last vacation. (Somehow there was no waitlist for the e-book from my hometown Indiana library, which was astonishing.)

I enjoyed it, but I was somewhat underwhelmed. I thought it was entertaining, but nothing jumped out as particularly original, and the character relationships felt way too rushed considering the book's brief timeline. Even with the looming doomsday aspect.

  • I just finished the audiobook this morning so I can finally discuss. While I liked the story and really got into it after the EDA picked up Zack at school and we got out of backstory land, I didn't love it nearly as much as RP1.
Mostly, I hated the beginning. I didn't buy the 80s pop culture connections in this one and they had me rolling my eyes. It seemed like a big stretch that Zack would be so entrenched in the 80s stuff just because he watched all of his dad's old movies and played his video games. In RP1 it made sense to the story since everyone was trying to solve the treasure hunt, but here it felt like the author just wanted to geek out over 80s stuff (which I normally love and and all for) and this was his way to shoe-horn that in. Also if Zak said "my dad's Raid the Arcade playlist" one more time I was going to scream. I would be so wasted if that phrase was part of an Armada drinking game.

I did like Lex and the whole resolution though, but I expected Zack's anger issues to play more of a role in the end game.

I guess overall, RP1 made me think a lot more than Armada did. Armada was still good fun, but didn't have the wow factor of RP1.

    This literally made me LOL!

The same way you were expecting something to come from his anger issues, I think I expected the playlist to have more significance given how often it was mentioned.

Overall, I just felt like the book was a bit forced and hurried.

  • But I'm really excited about the film adaptation of Ready Player One since Spielberg has signed on!
