What's the difference between UF and PNR?

I'm not super into this whole rage of genres, but I like most what I've read.  I've seen both subcategories floating around, and I'm just trying to understand what the difference is.

Related: I just DLed Burn for Me to my kindle to read as soon as I'm done with my current book.

  • People over at Goodreads asked the same thing.

    ~ E ~ 7/2010
    ~ A ~ 3/2014
  • Interesting.  It seems like kind of a blurry line in a lot of cases.

I feel that way about YA/NA, too.  Too much sexy time takes it out of the YA realm, I think.
  • What is UF and PNR?
  • @dutchgirl79 Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance

  • I think the Goodreads link is good reference. There is generally a paranormal/fantasy/steam punk element to both of them. My distinction is typically if it follows one main character or a set of characters, it is generally urban fantasy. If it follows a different couple in each book, then I consider it paranormal romance.

  • UF = more action driven with some paranormal elements in an URBAN setting. There is usually romance but not it's not necessarily the driving force of the book.

PNR usually follows the lines of traditional romance with paranormal elements. The focus is on the romance.

  • I didn't click the link, btw, just have researched this pretty heavily as I'm writing an UF novel.

I did not know this!  I have no background in literature, but if you need a beta reader, count me in!

That would be awesome! I'm almost done, too, so I'll let you know when it's ready!
