BC for prior to TTC

Hey ladies,

My husband and I recently married and we aren't ready for kids for another few years but my current BC (Mirena IUD) is up in a few months so we've been discussing possible options but due to medical complications (blood clot) I'm unable to use the majority of BCs on the market. Mirena was the only hormonal option available to me when I was forced off the BCP. To make things even more complicated, I'm unsure what my cycle is like because after my first period, I didn't have any cycles for 1 1/2 years until my mum & the OBGYN decided to put me on the pill to help regulate my cycles. I've heard the Mirena thins out the uterine lining which can lead to complications when TTC - I'm fairly young and we'll probably start trying when I'm about 27/28 but has anyone had issues TTC from the Mirena? Is it better to stick with the copper IUD?

I *think* that the Mirena will restore your fertility and mostly likely your lining within a few cycles of having it removed.

If you are talking YEARS I would have another one put in (or something similar with no hormones) until you are ready.

Since you're talking a few years, another Mirena or another similar non-hormonal IUD would probably be better. Both my previous OB-GYN (who put it in) and my current one (who took it out) both said that you are able to start the baby-making as soon as it's out. It does thin out the uterine lining and thickens the cervix, but those will clear themselves up.

I had the copper IUD (Paragard). It didn't work well for me, but it wasn't because of the copper (my uterus didn't like it).

Having the Paragard would allow you body to adjust to not having hormones. It is also good for up to 10 years, but you can take it out anytime when you are ready to TTC.

The Paragaurd can make your periods heavier and longer (because it works by irritating the lining of the uterus). I'm a huge fan of the Mirena (I have one, and recommend that my patients with no near plans to TTC get one. The Mirena does thin the lining, but it has no long term effects on your fertility and you can TTC immediately after getting it removed, and have success. Since it only acts locally, your body rebuilds the uterine lining after its out. You can also try the Skyla, which is smaller than the Mirena, with slightly less hormones. It works similarly, but we use this most often in women who have never had babies (since their ute has never expanded). Any other questions if be happy to answer.
