WWGPD?

Backstory: I had my Mirena removed at the end of May after getting the all clear from my rheumatologist. At that time, I told my OB/GYN that we were going to start TTC. She said ok, call after 60 days if you don't have a period and have BFNs.

I called at the end of July. I was told, again, that it could take several months for my cycles to return to normal and to call again at the end of August.

I called again today as I still haven't had a period and continue to have BFNs (I may be single-handedly keeping the makers of the Wondfo cheapies in business). The nurse said that the doctor (who is out today) wrote down that it could take several months to get my cycle back, but that she would check with the doctor when she's in tomorrow as to what she wants to do.

Now, I'm not a pushy person. I tend to be timid when it comes to standing up for myself. But I am at my limit for waiting. This show needs to get on the road. With that said, would you, oh wise GPers, if your doctor came back again and said wait, push back and say no more waiting?

Re: WWGPD?

  • Since it has been more than 60 days and you haven't had a period AND still getting negative tests I would keep calling.  If you are open to meds you can request a prescription for Provera to jump start your cycle.  This doesn't guarantee that your next cycle will be "normal" but it isn't good to let your lining build up for a long time.

Were your cycles regular before the Mirena?

  • I've been on BCP off and on since I was 16. When I was off it between 2004 and 2006, I was irregular. When I went off it between October 2011 and August 2012, I had started becoming more regular (my last cycle before going back on BCP was 34 days). After that, I was with DH and then started going to a rheumatologist.

  • How irregular, a few days difference each cycle or did you go months between periods?

Regardless, four months between periods isn't good (not panic worthy, but not good) and I would push for a prescription for Provera to see if that jump starts things.

With your history of irregular cycles I would also recommend temping (if you aren't already) with a basal body thermometer (about $10 at a drugstore or Amazon).  This will help you determine if you are ovulating each cycle.  It will also save you money in the long run.  If you know you haven't ovulated you won't have to use so many Wondfos.  :)

  • Irregular, I think, is subjective because during that time I was almost always bleeding. That was before I was diagnosed with anemia, though. I could tell when it was actually a period because it was "normal-looking" as opposed to what it was.

I've known it's not good. I've been temping and my temps are all over the place. Not to mention, the OPKs are always the same (a light 2nd line), which is why I keep testing.

  • I'm not a doctor and don't want to jump to conclusions, but months of bleeding, erratic temps and OPKs that don't work are some signs of PCOS.

I would still call your doctor again, get the Provera and see if that helps.  If after 6 months you haven't ovulated, gotten a "normal" cycle, or if your symptoms get worse I would ask your doctor for an appointment.

  • I would push it.  However, by OBGYN would go to 90 days rather than 60 before prescribing Provera.  Non-TTC, he doesn't prescribe it at all. No matter how long the cycle is.

I switched to a different OB after being off BC for 6 months and not getting a period.  That's when they ran testing and was diagnosed with PCOS.  They were happy to start treatment whenever we were ready.
It is very true that it can take a while for your cycles to come back, but prescribing Provera can sort of do a "reset" and may get things going.  I would definitely push it a bit more.

  • So my doctor called. I am going in for blood work (she said to test my thyroid, but I'm sure there will be other things tested) and will be starting on progesterone soon thereafter. She said because my cycle has been so long and I was on BCP for so long in the past, she wants to start on this course now and see what the result is in 3 months.

At least there is now a plan.

  • I was in the same boat when I stopped BCPs. I actually went 6 months with no period (183 days), then I had a 79 day cycle, my PCP ran some basic tests but sent me to an RE because she had some concerns about amenorrhea and my lifestyle (amenorrhea can cause bone loss, and I had already had a stress fracture in my foot) she prescribed provera after 60 days. my cycles never got "normal" (the RE defined normal as between 21 and 35 days) before my BFP.

It sounds like you have a good plan in place.
