Growth Spurt

Talk to me about what growth spurts look like.  I am going crazy over here.  E has colic.  The Dr. has me on this redic diet- no eggs, wheat, soy, dairy, and nuts.  If you know me, I am already a picky eater, so I have been starving!  Not literally, but I hate this diet.  The past 2 days, she has been eating almost every hour. She nurses for like 30-45 mins a time, so I am not getting much break.  I am feeling really drained. She doesn't sleep in less she is fed off the breast.  Then once you put her down, she wakes up. Both J and I are starting to go crazy.  Is this a growth spurt?  I think the reason I ask is that it hasn't just been the past 2 days.  Its been almost since she has been born.  but the past 2 days have been worse.

Re: Growth Spurt

  • I looked this up for you. Here is a quick copy from the article. I'll link the article here for you too. We used Gripe Water for Abby when she had colic. Now... we found out around 2 months she was suffering from silent reflux. She never spit up, but she would turn her back in un-natural ways in her bouncer. We thought it was strange but didn't know it was a sign. I'd hate to have anyone else go through what we did. Maybe ask the doctor about that too. I hope the article helps.

Common times for growth spurts are during the first few days at home and around 7-10 days, 2-3 weeks, 4-6 weeks, 3 months, 4 months, 6 months and 9 months (more or less). Babies don’t read calendars, however, so your baby may do things differently.

  • Welcome to parenthood....:)

  • Do you swaddle her? That might help keep her asleep in the transit from your arms to bed.

It could likely be a growth spurt. Babies nurse frequently to up your supply.

Hang in there and just keep telling yourself it won't last forever.

  • Another thing you may want to try is side lie nursing. This way when she falls asleep and unlatches you can sneak away and hopefully she will stay asleep since you won't have to move her.

  • Thanks for the suggestions.  We do all those things suggested.  We nurse laying down every night.  Gripe water is a life saver but only works so long.  She is currently swaddled right now but isn't loving it.  I think she gets too hot in the swaddle.

I have a call in the LC to talk to her.  I am questioning if I am making enough milk for her.
  • I hate how it feels wondering if you're supply is enough. I struggled so much with Caden and questioned my supply. Seeing the LC with Emerson helped my confidence a ton!

Is she having several wet diapers a day? Is she gaining weight?

It can't hurt to see if you can visit the LC or have her some to you and do a weighted feeding. It will help put your mind at ease.

  • She has not gained weight but has wet diapers.  BMs have gone down to 1 since Monday.  Before we were have several a day.  I feel empty.  Monday night we did a formula bottle bc I couldnt do it. she downed that and then ate on the breast.
  • Don't stress about the poop. Breastfed babies don't poop as much. I freaked when Caden was tiny because he hadn't pooped in 4 days. Doctor said totally normal to go a week without a bowel movement. They use up most of the breastmilk so there is less waste to come out.

I hope the LC puts your mind at ease. It's rough to be where you're at. I've been there. Don't feel bad/guilty about giving formula either. I've done it too. Sometimes you just need a break.

  • Thank you. The LC is concerned that I am not eating enough calories to produce enough milk. We are scheduled for a weighed feed tomorrow morning.  I am hoping for answers soon.
  • Yeah its hard to remember to eat enough when you're taking care of a baby. My family is constantly reminding me to eat. Tomorrow should help.... keep me updated k? And if you need to comiserate or just want to chat or vent, I'm here for you. This stuff is hard!

  • Liliana was the same way. At four weeks we began supplementing with formula. We only gave her 2 4oz bottles of it a day, but it is what she needed to stay full. I researched and found the ingredients in Gerber Good Start Gentle to be similar to breastmilk.

Oh and at 2 years old, Liliana still nurses to fall asleep!!!!! We side nurse and she co-sleeps. It is not ideal at this point, but it is what works for us.

Good luck! I know how hard this can all be.

  • Thank you ladies and Mark!

I met with LC today.  I am not giving her enough at all, so the LC took me off the crazy diet (thank God!), gave me fenugreek, and we will be breastfeeding while adding a formula supplement afterwards.  I also need to up my calorie intake.  This explains why our evenings are so terrible!

I feel so much better that I got some answers.
  • Joy has never produced enough regardless of diet.  Even tried the fenugreek.  We just gave up in a sense.  We feed him every drop she manages to pump and then supplement with formula.  Although, at this point it goes breast milk -> food -> formula.

  • Did they mention power pumping at all? I've never tried it but heard it works wonders. You pump for ten minutes, then wait ten min and repeat for 1 hr.

So glad the LC helped! Things are going to get better!

  • Joy tried it.  Helped in our case a little bit, but only at the times we did it.

  • I am currently power pumping.  :)  I got the kiinde system so I am pumping into bags for daycare while she naps.
