Check your receipts, a reminder

I went to two stores on Sunday and was overcharged at both!  The grocery store rang up onions instead of grapes resulting in a $2.00 overcharge.  I noticed this as I was receipt checking in the parking lot.  We went back in and got the cost of the item refunded resulting in free grapes.

Then the drug store took my coupons but 2 didn't scan correctly.  Once again I noticed this as I was walking out and went back in for the adjustment.  Glad I caught these errors before getting home.

Remember to always check receipts!  DH learned this the hard way.  He came home once and I checked his receipt.  He was charged for 10 broccoli instead of 2!  Now he always checks.

  • I always double check to make sure it makes sense. There's always a chance for human error and I've definitely had computer errors when things scan incorrectly.

  • The Winn Dixie closest to my house is notorious for this!  I don't have a problem at the other ones, just that one.  It seems like their weekly specials often don't ring up correctly...especially if it is the first/last day of the special.

    I almost always check my receipts everywhere I go.  Mistakes...either on the part of the cashier or something ringing up wrong...are just TOO common.

    I went to Walmart the other day and bought three avocados.  I noticed she charged me for four, except I had already left the line.  I could have corrected it by waiting in line at customer service for 20-30 minutes...instead, I just went to produce and grabbed a fourth avocado, lol.

    I've also had to remind H lately that before he goes to the register he needs to have some idea what his final bill is going to be (he's always impressed I can eyeball our groceries on the belt and be within $5 of our total (little does he know I've been adding it up in my head and the produce weights account for the error). 

    H shopped a few weeks ago at a local athletics store for new running shoes, when he checked out his "cart" was two pairs of shoes (one for running one for his soccer league) a pair of running shorts, and a bottle of nuun. which to me I'd go, ok show one ~$70, shoe 2 ~$40, shorts ~$30, nuun $5 so $145ish...plus his 5% running club discount...$135ish...well they rang him out for $250! he didn't blink, and only looked back at the receipt when I looked at the credit card statement and sent him a text message along the lines of "what the #*#$ did you spend $250 on at XYZ running store?! I thought you told me the shoes were on sale?!" turns out they rang-up the original prices on the two pairs of shoes (so like $100ish each) and then forgot to add in the running club discount. By the time I caught it on the credit card and H dug the receipt out from whereever he stashed it, it was too late for them (by store policy) to credit our card...so we've now got $120 in credit to this store, which I've told H is mine to use for new running shoes after baby is born and I'm cleared to go back to running.

  • I watch the cashier ring up my veggies. Many people don't know the difference between some of the leafy greens and I've caught over-charges. Subsequently, I've caught under-charges and I always let them know. Many times they just let it slide, but I feel better knowing I was honest.

    We shop at Target for groceries. You especially have to watch your things like diapers and wipes. Many times the cashiers don't know the stuff is marked down OR that a "buy 2 get a $5 gift card" promo is going on.

  • @MommyLiberty5013, I don't shop at Target very often because their locations aren't convenient for me, but I've also noticed they are terrible about promo offers ringing up correctly.  In fact, it's so bad, I usually won't even buy something on special, unless it is a good enough deal that it is worth fighting for.

    Because that is usually what happens!  I have to take extra time to hassle with the cashier, because it doesn't ring up correctly, and often the manager gets involved because the cashier can't control if it doesn't ring up the right way.  It is a time consuming, ridiculous amount of drama because Target can't get their s**t together.

    When I worked at Target ages ago, the official policy was not to argue price with a customer for anything under $20. Perhaps that's changed, but it really made life easy at the time! For more expensive stuff we had to find out the true price because loads of people would lie to game the system.
  • @Xstatic3333, oh that's interesting!  That is not the case at my local Targets.  I wouldn't be surprised at all if that is the "local" policy, even if it is not the corporate one.

    Ah!  The joys of retail.  I agree with you, I think it is important for companies to give employees some decision making abilities in order to best serve their customers.  I used to manage a big gas station/convenience store and I had a lot of authority to handle customer complaints and/or adjust pricing problems.

    It came up the most often when I first started.  We had a policy that, if a customer paid for the fuel with cash, they got a 2 cent/gallon discount.  The price change was supposed to happen automatically at the pump when we entered the cash sale on the register, but every once in awhile, there was a glitch and the gallon price didn't change.

    While I certainly didn't blame anyone for coming back in to complain and get their difference, more often than not people would lose their minds over this and come back in ranting and raving.  I would immediately apologize, look up their pump number to check how much they had pumped and at what price, and then refund the difference (if appropriate).

    But the best part?  And this was almost always what happened.  I hand them 2-4 dimes back for their 10-20 gallon purchase.  An utter look of shock on their face.  They almost start to argue, but then (finally) do the math in their head and realize we are talking about a difference of cents not dollars.  What I wish I could have said, "Yeah, dude.  You just came in here screaming at me for 20 frickin' cents.  Enjoy your day."
