Favorite Documentaries?

I'm a documentary junky. I've seen most of the popular ones, wondering what good ones you guys have seen lately.

Bonus points if they're on Netflix!

Re: Favorite Documentaries?

  • Ones I've watched recently and enjoyed:

    Stripped
The Smartest Guys in the Room
    Man on Wire
    Schooled
    First Position

I had heard great things about Jiro Dreams of Sushi and I LOVE sushi so I was excited for it, but didn't think it was super well done. Bummer.

  • I loved Somm.  I also really liked PJ20 about Pearl Jam.  I think they are both on Netflix.

  • I really enjoyed Forks Over Knives, Fast Food Nation, Fat Sick, & Nearly Dead on Netflix. DH watches a ton of documentaries, most are political or military. If your're into those, let me know I can see what his favs have been.

  • Burts Bees?  I don't remember the name of that one, but it's good and on Netflix.

There is also one on Netflix about origami that was fascinating - Between the Folds.  We've watched it about 6 times as background when we were cooking or cleaning or something.

If you like Reggae and/or Bob Marley, both Marley (a biopic) and Marley Road Trip (about his sons' planning and taking a motorcycle trip through Africa) are great.

I assume you've seen the series about the West Memphis Three?  I can't remember the names of those, and I haven't even watched them yet, but I've heard great things.

    Blackfish, obvi.

DH keeps talking about one he watched about a 15-ish year old girl who sailed solo around the world.  Again, I don't know the name, but DH has been trying to talk me into watching it for weeks.  But again, I rarely watch TV alone and he's already seen it, so I'm not sure when he thinks I'm going to watch it.  Maybe in the winter.
  • I second the Burt's Bees one! I still haven't seen Blackfish, but SIL said it was really good.

  • Oh, the 15 year old girl around the world sailing one was AWESOME. I think its called Maidentrip.

And the West Memphis Three was... a lot. You can watch the whole thing on YouTube, that's the only place I could find it.

I saw one last year sometime about juveniles serving life sentences called Lost for Life that was shocking and really, really good.

That one was really good! I thought of another one called Muscle Shoals, about a recording studio in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. I really enjoyed it.

  • Oh!  Truth in 24 and the follow up to it were both really cool if you are into cars and racing at all.  They're about the 24 Hours of Le Mans race.  I only watched the first one the first time because Jason Statham narrates it and I could listen to him talk all day, but it turned out to be fascinating, and I've put it on a couple of times now and watched the sequel, which is like the same movie but focusing on a different year of the race.

YUP.  Also, American Epic is coming to PBS this fall.

There's so many great music ones out there - Muscle Shoals, PBS's American Masters about Ahmet Ertegun, Sound City, Stones in Exile . . .
  • I can only think of two documentaries that I've seen recently: Blackfish and the Kurt Cobain documentary.

Blackfish was great, but sad. It made me never want to go to Sea World again.

The one about Kurt Cobain was well-done, but I had some issues with it.

Well, I was never a huge fan of Nirvana to begin with. And although I thought the film was really well done, I just wasn't thrilled with Kurt Cobain as a person, but that can probably lead to an even bigger discussion regarding mental health, not getting the help that he needed, etc. It left me feeling very conflicted.

  • Recently I've watched Vegucated and Forks over Knives.  I enjoyed them both.  Awhile back I watched a documentary on bluefin tuna and sushi that was really interesting.  I forget what it was called.

I thought it was good as well, but I just felt weird about it. Not sure how to explain. I felt like maybe I was invading his privacy or something, because he can't speak for himself any more. The stuff with Courtney's dad was weird but interesting. She disgusts me. I adored Nirvana. Of course, they became popular when I was a freshman in high school, so I was at a rather influential age. ;)
