Re: 8 year old won't stop sucking thumb in bed

  • I sucked my thumb until I was 7 or 8. My mom would paint my nails and then remove the nail polish right before bed, the remover had a terrible taste. Sounds like you've tried something similar. My dentist had recommended a mouth guard at night, you could try that but I remember taking it out and sucking my thumb anyway. Do any kids show have episodes regarding thumb sucking? Books?
  • I was a kid who sucked until 5th grade. I had such a bad overbite that I had to get braces in 6th grade and wear head gear at night to bed to correct the problem. The head gear broke the thumb-sucking habit.

Has your son seen an orthodontist?

I had the horrible overbite too. I had braces in 4th grade. The only thing I'd be careful with he orthodontist is that they'll push you early because they know parents will opt out as the child gets older. My bottom teeth shifted really bad after I stopped wearing a retainer in college, maybe wait on braces, but see if you can get something in there to help with the thumb sucking.
