sleeping pills? sort of a poll

Stemming from Jacki's mention of taking a sleeping pill before trying to read her book at night - this reminded me of a conversation I recently had with some friends.

How often do you take something to help you sleep at night?  Be it melatonin, advil PM, nyquil, unisom, sudafed, etc.
Why?  What makes you take it?
Does your DH ever take anything to help him sleep?

I feel like a lot of women I know take some kind of sleeping pill or something on the reg.  But guys not so much.

Re: sleeping pills? sort of a poll

  • I'm been sleeping better lately than ever, I attribute it to my new job.  Less stress.

I probably should have been though.  J does not.

  • To answer my own questions, I take something probably a couple of nights a week.  Not every single night, but often enough.  Often I just have trouble shutting off my brain, and I find my mind racing when I'm trying to fall asleep, but I also find that I just sleep more soundly if I take something.  I'm not tossing and turning and waking up to every little sound like I would be otherwise.

Most times I take melatonin, but if I'm headachey or something (which is also often a problem by the end of a long day), I might take nyquil.  It also depends on what time it is, because if I take nyquil after 10 pm, I'll have trouble waking up in the morning, but I can take melatonin as late as 1 or 2 am and still get up no problem.

DH never takes anything at all, and he falls asleep within seconds every single night.

Why?  What makes you take it? I've had insomnia for as long as I can remember and this is the only thing that works.
Does your DH ever take anything to help him sleep? Never

  • Rarely. If I do, it's tylenol pm. Mh never does.

    My favorite Cake Wreck ever.

  • I've taken Advil PM on occasion but only if I have pain that is keeping me up like my foot healing, etc. DH takes it when he travels because he can't sleep well in strange settings.

  • I used to take Tylenol PM a few nights a week, I've tried really hard to drop down to Sunday and possibly Monday nights which I find are harder to sleep with the stress of the new week. This spring/summer was rather bad, I took allergy meds a lot so I waited until bed time and took something sleepy. Now that it's getting dark earlier I'm hoping to get tired earlier.

To help me try to sleep I do try to read or put on relaxation music.
  • I take the target brand nighttime sleep aids, which are just the sleepy part of nyquil. Sometimes my body forgets to get tired for several nights in a row and it's horrible and I take some to remind it how good sleep feels. If I don't take one by ten, I don't take one because I wake up too late.

Shaun never takes anything and sleeps happily all night long every  night. Sometimes it makes me want to kill him in his sleep.

  • Never for me or DH. I grew up with a mother who takes a pill for everything, to sleep, to wake up, a cough, a cramp, you name it. It has made me avoid pills as much as possible. Fortunately, I have never had trouble going to sleep, unless I had caffeine that day.

Of course, I sometimes stay up too late reading, but that is my own fault. :)

Sometimes I pretend to myself that I have insomnia. When what I really have is a good book and inadequate respect for tomorrow.:

  • Occasionally I'll take Melatonin but only if I'm exhausted because I haven't been sleeping well. It seems like if I take NyQuil, Benadryl, or anything like that, I can't wake up in the mornings. I probably only take it a couple times a month, if that. DH never takes anything.

  • Neither DH nor myself take anything to help us sleep.

I used to fall asleep within minutes of shutting my eyes.  Now it takes me several hours.  I keep telling myself to talk to a doctor but haven't yet.  DH has RSL so he's a mess, too.  Basically neither of us ever sleep but I just figure it's our new normal and part of getting older.

You might try Calms Forte. I really love it for when I can't fall asleep or stay asleep all night because my brain is racing- it's by Hyland's and is just some kind of natural tiny pill that just helps your brain relax. You can take one if you're just feeling little high strung and it really well help you mellow enough to get to/stay asleep.

  • For a long time, I thought that what I was struggling with was depression, but after I started taking something to help me sleep, I realized that really I was just exhausted and couldn't respond to things normally or take even the slightest amount of stress without snapping because I never slept. I started taking sleep aids and that depression feeling faded almost instantly.

I read a study recently that was about how generally insomnia is listed as a symptom of depression but often it can be reversed, that depression is happening because of the insomnia, if that makes sense, and I think that was my case 100%.

I used to take Tylenol PM a lot (years ago) but if I couldn't get a full nights sleep, it made super groggy and tired in the morning.  I stopped taking it when I almost drove into ditch because I fell asleep while driving.

I have terrible insomnia but Julia wakes up so much in the night that I won't take anything for it.

I also recommend Hyland's Calms Forte for you too! lol, they should pay me.

It helps you relax enough to sleep, but it's not a sleeping pill so it doesn't knock you out. You can wake up, tend to a kid and then still be relaxed enough to fall back asleep. This was my experience anyway!

  • I rarely need anything to help me fall asleep. My boyfriend even commented last weekend that he was jealous, because I seem to fall asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow.

When my mind is racing, and I can't doze off right away, I masturbate. I get instantly drowsy after an O.

(Sorry, TMI. But it was relevant.)

I will look into it, thanks!!  I will be ready to fall asleep and then all of the sudden need to decide all of the world's problems the second I close my book.  I've thought about melatonin, too.  Something natural to help reset my circadian rhythm.

  • Neither my dh or myself ever take anything to help fall asleep.  My h never needs it, he can fall asleep instantly.  I'm usually a pretty good sleeper too, unless I'm stressed about something and my mind is spinning or I stay up late reading.
