Non-depressing books?

One of my good friend's four year olds was recently diagnosed with cancer- she had a surgery yesterday to remove it and it went well but she is lined up for months and months of chemo & radiation. She just text me and asked me for non-depressing books she could read while they spend tons of time in the hospital. I am the queen of depressing books, so I could only think up a few. Whatcha got?

She likes more literary books, but is pretty easy to please.

Re: Non-depressing books?

  • How to Write a Novel by Melanie Sumner
Ana of California by Andi Teran
Love May Fail by Matthew Quick
    Texts from Jane Eyre
Small Victories by Anne Lamott (non-fiction, but so good)

  • That's sad - out of 149 books read this year, I have five that are not depressing.

  • I haven't felt the Ravens Boys books were depressing so far. The finale might be, though.

Cinder, Scarlett, & Cress aren't depressing so far.

Enclave, Outpost, & Horde are kind of scary, not depressing.

I didn't think the Grisha series was depressing.

Harry Potter has depressing parts, but I think it's overall an uplifting series.

The Burning Sky, The Perilous Sea are exciting and magical and not depressing. But there's a finale to come.

Several Jane Austen novels are not depressing - Emma, Pride & Prejudice, Sense & Sensibility turns out happy.

The Help isn't depressing but it's pretty heavy.

  • I'm glad you asked, I was going to start a similar post since just about everything on my Goodreads is depressing. Perhaps a non-fiction biography or autobiography, but I guess you'd have to find someone uplifting, may Ellen or someone? Not a big help since she likes literary.

I read the Accidental Billionaires a few years ago, it's not great literature but interesting behind the scenes how Facebook was created, I guess something along those lines, something she has an interest in? I think there's a behind the scenes book about the show "Friends", but now I can't find it on google. Not sure if she even liked that show, but maybe something like that, fluffy?

The Stepford Wives isn't depressing and it's a quick read. How about the Devil Wears Prada? Although I hear the movie was better than the book...
  • Ok, I'm digging deep in the recesses of my goodreads for some uplifting choices, but not all of these are going to be fiction:

You're Never Weird on the Internet (Almost) by Felicia Day - just finished it and even though I haven't seen her in anything as an actress I thought the book was delightful

March, Book one and two - graphic novels but man are they good

Gummi Bears Should Not Be Organic by Stephanie Wilder-Taylor (not a mom and still laughed out loud)

The Peach Keeper by Sarah Addison Allen

    Attachments by Rainbow Rowell

    Mr. Penumbra's Twenty-Four Hour Bookstore

All There Is: Love Stories from StoryCorps

Ella Minnow Pea by Mark Dunn

    The Golem and the Jinni

    The Martian

    Hyperbole and a Half

  • Humor memoirs are always good. I'd suggest Jen Lancaster or Jenny Lawson.

  • Sarah Jio, Susanna Kearsley, Sarah Addison Allen, and Kate Morton are all sort of family-romance-y, but sort of pretty and not depressing.

    Back if I have more.

Rainbow Rowell, One Plus One (Moyes), Lexicon (Barry)- I think last one is okay.

    Big Little Lies?
  • Susanna Kearsley is good.  Start with The Winter Sea.

    My favorite Cake Wreck ever.

  • I just started it, but I think The Royal We is going to be very lighthearted.
