s/o iPhones

I'm curious as to what people are doing/planning on doing with the new plan structure with Verizon Wireless and other carriers, if anything?  Also, if you feel like sharing, what's your monthly bill and what does it include?  A few people have mention that my plan sounds expensive, but I'm not sure how that's possible.  I'm not yet willing to get rid of my fancy phone, but it kills me how much it costs.

$155.00

2 iPhones
700 Shared Minutes
4GB data (2 each)
Unlimited Text
Includes a 20% employer discount (saves about $19)

I'm so uneducated on my options (month to month, prepaid, different carriers, etc) and I would love someone to school me.

Re: s/o iPhones

  • I pay the same amount with AT&T but ours is weird. We have androids.

We share 700 mins a month

I have: Unlimited mobile to mobile texting and 200 texts for everyone else and 2gbs of data

J has: Unlimited data (legacy thing) and 200 texts a month.

So I can text him and it doesn't count towards my 200 but they count towards his. So if he texts me back it counts as part of his 200 so we Google Hangout each other and it doesn't cost anything. Unlimited texting isn't an option under our plan. AT&T keeps trying to get us to switch to one of their newer plan structures but it would cost us more money and he'd lose unlimited data. We're under contract until next year and we may consider switching providers and seeing what they offer.

Whether or not you find your own way, you're bound to find some way. If you happen to find my way, please return it, as it was lost years ago. I imagine by now it's quite rusty.”

  • So, I can't help too much because this stuff is kind of foreign to me, but I can say that we switched to t-mobile a while back because of their phone payment plan.  I guess with pretty much all carriers, part of the charge on your plan is monthly payments toward the cost of your actual phone.  But after so many months, that $700 iphone (or whatever is costs) should be paid off.  Most carriers just keep billing you to subsidize the cost of phones, but with T-mo, your bill goes down once your phone is paid off.

We pay $155/month for 2 iphones with shared unlimited everything.
Our bill is actually $104/month, plus 2x$25 payments for our phones, which will be up in a couple of months and our total cell bill will be about $104/month.
  • We are on a family plan with my parents and brother (so 5 of us).  My brother researched the HELL out of this and I think our deal is pretty good.

    AT&T
4 iphones, 1 archaic flip phone
    Unlimited text
    Unlimited talk
    15GB data

The bill is $200 total.  Costs me $80 a month.

This is exactly what I have too.

    Verion
    Unlimited talk and text
    1GB data
    Insurance plan (highest they have)
    $74.00

You can do a sprint cut your bill in half program if you are looking to switch. I love Verizon, but they are not the most competitive.

  • Not completely relevant but my plan is...

    Unlimited domestic talk & text
1000 minutes' talk to neighboring countries
    2 GB data
    $30 / month

(That's just the service plan. I paid for my iPhone up front, but got a 22% discount as long as I stayed with my provider for a year.)

Honestly, I find mobile service in the US a bit ridiculous. Are they still locking GSM phones? And why is it so expensive?

My foreign friends say the same thing. Phones are still locked to network. Nobody knows why they're so expensive except Apple.

I don't even think Apple knows why service is so expensive. I've always found it interesting that cell service is still so cheap in developing countries where it was never fiscally advantageous to build landlines!

  • It's expensive because people are glued to their phones and can't live without them and will pay out the wazoo to have them, myself included. It is frustrating, but it really only makes sense.

  • Everyone I know is glued to their phone as well, though. And I don't know anyone who has a landline.

I'm guessing it has more to do with competition. I don't think you can legally lock a phone to a single provider, and there are more companies to choose from. Some of them even lease their bandwidth from one of the larger companies.

...And from looking up figures, apparently if you consider it as a percentage of income, it's not that expensive in the US:
