Q About Insurance and Maternity Coverage

When I was pregnant with Abby I had to pay something like $200/ appointment or 1/month once the appointments got close together. I had insurance through school and still had to pay that high of a fee on top of the premium. This was before the Obamacare mandate happened. I was looking it up online today and saw that there is not supposed to be any co-pays or charges for pre-natal care. Is this true? Are you ladies having your check-ups at no cost? Please let me know what happened if you were pregnant after Obamacare passed. My cousin was pregnant the same time as me 3 years ago and she didn't have to pay anything for her appointments, only labor and delivery. Thanks!

On another note... I ordered 2 books for Abby to use to announce to DH when I get pregnant again. I got Waiting for Baby and I'm a Big Sister. I hid them in the closet and plan on asking him to read Abby a bedtime story the day I find out we're pregnant with #2.

Re: Q About Insurance and Maternity Coverage

  • I had to pay my $20 co-pay for each visit and my $250 co-pay for when I was admitted to the hospital.

What you pay really depends on your plan.

  • I think my insurance policy is that I pay one copay, for my first visit and then L&D .But I really have no idea.

    And that is so cute!

  • I had to pay $50 once and not after that.
  • Our Dr had an "ob fee" for the entire pregnancy.  They didn't treat it as a per-visit thing.  A lot of things like the ultrasounds were covered 100%, other things are covered depending on how it got billed to the insurance (ie. various lab tests were billed separately as they used an outside lab for the blood work).

I think this may be what happened when I was pregnant with Abby. I wish I would've looked into it more back then. I have so many questions now. I wonder if I could call my old insurance company. The only thing is I'm not even sure who I had anymore.

Well, I wouldn't worry too much about it.  Won't matter how things were covered with the old company.  All that will matter is how your current ob and current insurance work together.  In a lot of ways, that'll be a lot less stessfull.  You won't be going "my last insurance covered this." with them going "well, we're not your last insurance".

This is very true. I'm just worried I'll have to pay that $200/ appointment again. That was steep. I'm not sure how we'd be able to do that.

  • Last pregnancy, I had different coverage. My OB just had her fee and they requested that you try to pay something at rah visit towards the OB fee. Which I did. I ended up getting over $600 back after I had Lily because my insurance covered more of the OB fee then my dr had anticipated. It was actually kind of nice because I turned around and used it for some of the hospital bills.

So far this pregnancy I haven't had to pay any office fees. I've had to pay some of the ultrasound and lab work.
