What do you have in your workspace?

I'm coming up on 4 months at my new job and my cube is still stark.  It's like an art form here to have a decorated cube, but I came from a very minimalist company so it's outside my comfort zone.  I need to step up my game.

  • Pictures everywhere. - of family and friends, of landscapes that I or DH took, prints I bought on vacations, a Fenway blueprint, stuff from one of my fave artists . . .
    Paintings by my kids
Three plants (that I need a reminder in my calendar to remind me when to water)
    2 lamps - and I desperately want a third
A couple of cute little storage boxes and baskets
    Framed diplomas and law licenses

I'm planning to get an area rug to put under the client chairs across from my desk, but my whole building is getting new carpeting and walls painted soon, so I'm waiting for that to happen so I can coordinate the color.

Our paralegal just moved her cube to a bigger and better one, and she put chevron contact paper up like wallpaper on her shelving, and it looks really nice.  She's got pretty baskets for stuff, a few fake plants, lots of pictures and some of those woodcut words and her initials in wood blocks.  It's all coordinated and lovely.  She calls her whole thing "cube chic."  There are entire pinterest boards dedicated to this, apparently.  You can google it.
  • My cube is a disaster area sort of like a nuclear bomb blew up all the worlds paper factories and all that paper landed on my desk.  I've got a pile system.  On good days the piles are neatly stacked.  On a bad day they are spread out everywhere.  For an organization that is attempting to go paperless, there is an obscene amount of paper being used.  I have a bunch of file organizers that are filled to the max and spilling over into piles on my desk, post it's scattered everywhere, a couple of pics of my husband and kids, a khaleesi figure, a magnent left by the previous cube owner, a retro pic of my boss that also came with the cube (he'd love for me to take it down which is why it's still hanging up), and a pen/paper clip/post it organizer.  There is a lot of other misc crap not worth mentioning.  Ideally I'd like to decorate it and make it organzied but ain't nobody got time for that.

  • Most work stuff that I need. A calendar. Two outdated pics of my niece and nephew that I adore. Two bottles of lotion. A pic of mh and me. Pens, paper clips, tape, stapler, post its, a brand new bottle of purell, highlighters. Notebook. That sort of thing. It looks personalized but it's mostly work stuff that I can leave if my assignment ends.

    A flying monkey slingshot
A framed signed photo of the astronaut Leland Melvin

  • I WFH and we just moved my desk to the dining room to make space for baby, and one of the things I've been doing to keep the space organized and separate is no paper clutter. I have a pad of sticky notes and a small container of the chocolate covered coffee beans we bought on our honeymoon that I use as a pen holder. I keep a small file in the only drawer in the desk with notes or handouts from when I worked in the office.

When I worked in the office, I had a few photos of family and a couple of memes pinned up, a box of tissues, and a small container filled with backups like chap stick, cough drops, hair ties, etc.

I always wanted to put up a holiday tree and decorate it year round, if you are looking for ideas.

  • On my walls - a custom photo calendar (of my kids), one of those collage photo mats with lots of ribbons that you tuck lots of photos under, my beautifully framed college diplomas and CPA certificate, a large piece of art (a winter scene with mountains)

On my desk - 3 framed photos, one cute ceramic figurine

  • I hotel in different offices every day (I have 5 to choose from depending on what I'm doing or who I want to see on a particular day), so pretty much whatever I bring with me that day is on my desk.  But sometimes I have an awesome view!  Today, no view.  I don't have a window. :(

I have so many "set abouts" on my desk. I'm a trinket keeper.

  • I get canvases for Audrey to paint on, and then I hang them up--so I have two awesome pictures from her on my wall that she painted for me.  I have a bulletin board full of cards and pictures from when I was sick that people sent me.  I have a kitty cat post it note holder and a flower tape dispenser.  I have a fabulous pencil holder and that's about it as far as personal stuff.

It looks a lot bigger than it is, but yes, it's roomy. I need lots of space to do layouts for exhibits and I had to share an office for the first two years I was here...NOT conducive to constructing exhibits!

  • I'm hesitant to get too comfy since I'm technically a temp but I have a few pictures of DD, a stuffed animal penguin,a throw blanket, water bottle, Ipod speakers, daily calendar and a drawer with snacks. My last job I had more stuff in the drawers than I did on my desk-it took three boxes to send everything home, counting my 4 pairs of shoes. I also had a bulletin board where I put favorite quotes, some comics that I printed out (xkcd & cyande and happiness) and calendar pages I wanted to keep. I put out a Christmas tree every year with lights and ornaments. We'll see if I am still there at Christmas to put it out.

I can't do too much in the way of personalizing, because I just have a desk. And I have enough trouble trying to fit my computer and monitors on top!
    image

The only personal things I have on my desk are:
    - a small Jiji cat plush from Kiki's Delivery Service that I bought at the Ghibli museum in Tokyo
    - a fox temple bell from Inari shrine in Kyoto (If you ring it, "Good things will come." I save it for special circumstances)
    - a framed print from a local artist that the company gave us for Christmas last year
    image

I also have a cabinet behind me. Most of my personalization is there.
    image
    - a candy jar
    - a washcloth packaged to look like a piece of cake that a colleague gave me a few years ago
    - a boxy origami bunny that a colleague gave me a few months ago
    - a trophy from my old team (a column of flames with a horse's ass on top that says "Attitude")
    - a flip-flop solar-powered plant
    - a mini orchid that has lost all of its blossoms
    - a photo of a sad-looking penguin that I took in Antarctica
    - a dry-erase speech bubble to fill in why the penguin is currently sad
    image

(The big green plants aren't really mine. I just have the responsibility to take care of them.)

  • I usually sit at the reference desk, so it's all work stuff: pens, post-its, scanners, receipt printers, labels, that kind of thing.  I usually bring a coffee mug from home with me each day and keep my phone on the desk, but that's it as far as personal items.  My "official" desk has all my processing stuff - book covers, paper cutter, bone folder, book repair stuff.  After a few bad experiences with students at my old job I stopped bringing anything personal to work.
    imageimage image
  • Let's see...

    - Lamp
    - Dry Erase board that I never use
    - two monitors
    - Filing cabinet
    - Corkboard
    - A million pics of DS and 1 of DH
    - Business card holder
    - Pic of when I graduated from the Marine Corps
    - Pic with 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (Be joyful always; pray continually: give thanks in all circumstances for this is God's Will for you in Christ Jesus)
    - Scentsy warmer
    framed PMP certificate
    - 2 pencil holders
    - a magnetic sculpture thing
    - a small New Testament bible
    - a Lab manual
    - a craft that DS made

  • So why is he sad @GilliC
At the moment, it's because he broke the build.
I think I'm going to change it today to "I didn't test my change before I submitted it."

  • I have a "creative corner" with art supplies. One wall is an inspiration wall with designs and layouts I like from other magazines. I have a couple of cards from co-workers. An ultrasound picture. Lotion. Kleenex box. And a cup of pens, markers, highlighters, etc.
I write sexy books. I read all the books. I love dresses & macarons.
