Classics are not my thing. I know I read this in high school but I don't remember a thing about it.

Holy cow, I don't want to put it down! AND it's easy to read (not like some of the ridiculous books I had to read in high school). You would think I would have liked it in high school...

I might follow you in reading this. I felt the same way in HS and I'm not usually fond of classics. I always wonder if it's the "forced" reading. I never do well when someone is expecting me to read, I don't relax into it well.

I've always loved this book. But I can agree with you guys that forced reading is not the ideal way to read. And I've always been an avid reader, it was just that there were so many other things I would've rather been reading than whatever was assigned for English class. For the most part, anyway. The Grapes of Wrath was the devil's work, as far as I was concerned in HS.

I've never been a huge fan of the Austen type classics with their flowery language, either. I found that P7P was a little better when I read it aloud with a British accent, but otherwise, it's not for me.

This was the only book I remember liking!

I remember having to read Romeo and Juliet and even though we knew the story, we could NOT understand a word of Shakespeare.

Ugh, same here! I wasn't forced to read TKAM in high but I read it on my own and loved it. Still probably my favorite book of all time. Glad you are enjoying it.

I read this in high school and loved it then but I reread it this year and had a new appreciation for it as an adult. So glad you're enjoying it!

I loved the books I was forced to read in high school! TKAM holds a special place in my heart, because it started me on the path of loving classic American lit.

I've actually never read this book. It was never assigned to me in high school or any of my english literature classes in college. Surprising but true. I plan to read it eventually.

I'd also say you need to watch the Gregory Peck movie version, even if black and white movies aren't your thing. It's SO worth it. My sister and I got to see it in the theater a few years ago and it was an incredible experience. And it made me want Atticus even more.
