Sort of money related..........

I recently bought a bunch of Nature's Recipe grain free cat dry food. I didn't realize until I got home that most of it has an expiration date of
10-15-15. I no longer have the sales receipt.

All the bags say: Best by 10-15-15

Can dry cat food still be safely used after the best used date. If so, for how long. I have the packages stored in a dry room away from sunlight.

Should I use it for a bit or toss it in the garbage? I bought quite a few bags. Kicking myself now.

What should I do or what would you do?

My thoughts is that it's probably fine for another month or two but I'm not sure. Anyone encounter an issue like this before?

Re: Sort of money related..........

  • It's probably ok, but you can probably contact Nature's Recipe for confirm

  • Where did you buy it from? I would probably contact the store even without the receipt and see if they will exchange them for bags that don't expire so soon.

A local pet store. True. Maybe they'll exchange it.

This. Most pet stores have really liberal return/exchange policies for pet food.
  • If you paid with debit/credit, the store might be able to do a receipt lookup for you.

I think so too since it's dry food. I will probably give them a call tomorrow to be sure.
  • It's also just a "best by" date.  Not an "expiration" date.  Since it's still in the sealed bag it'll be fine.
  • I would think it would be fine; although, if you decide not to keep it, maybe you could donate it to a shelter.  They could probably use it up rather quickly and it wouldn't be a total waste.

I'm leaning on donating. I think I am going to give most of it away and keep no more than 2 month's worth. Thanks for all the responses!
