Kindle Fire questions

My son asked for a Kindle Fire for his birthday, he will be 11.  He wants it for reading and to play a few games.  Which one would you buy?  There are so many choices.  I have a plain old original kindle just for reading so I'm clueless.

Re: Kindle Fire questions

  • I have a Fire HD7, and I think it's fantastic! The screen/picture is beautifully clear and vivid. Any use of the wifi is very fast, very responsive. The functionality is intuitive, easy to use. I read on it very often, but I spend a little time on facebook or other web searching. My biggest complaint - I very often read in the complete dark while I put my toddler to sleep, and the screen is still too bright even on the lowest brightness & night settings. I doubt this will trouble your son, though. Also, if he leaves the wifi on all the time, he would have to charge the battery every three days or so. If he turns on airplane mode when not needed, then the battery can last a week without charging. I don't use many apps on it personally, but I have a great many 'read to me' books and apps for my kids, and it's storage space is excellent. That's all I can think of off the top. I'm happy to answer any specific questions.

  • Thanks!  Can you tell me how many gb you have?  That and what size screen to get were the two things I was trying to figure out the most.

  • I have a Kindle Fire HDX 7 inch screen. Not sure how many GB I have but I love it. I'm more simple, I watch Amazon and Netflix videos, read books and play few games. I'm happy with the 7 inch, but as I said I"m simple. My dad has the 8.9 inch which is big, but I think it might be too big, esp if your son is only 11. I believe there's ways you can set parental settings before you give him the device.
  • My Fiancé was given a brand new (unopened) kindle Fire HD 7 when he signed up for his bar prep class. He was going to give it to me, but I prefer an e-reader since I already have an iPad.

If anyone is interested, I believe he's selling it for $115.

  • 8gb wifi only.

Just thought I'd mention it in case anyone was interested.

It's the 7 inch and 8 GB. I don't really watch Netflix or anything, but it's a great size for reading, games, and web browsing. Amazon ran a special back in April in which this device was only $79.

  • I have the Kindle Fire HDX with 4g, and I use it all the time.  I got it as a gift two years ago.  The battery lasts maybe a day, but I use it a lot, for pretty much everything.  The USB charging port no longer works -- looking at the kindle help forums this isn't an unusual problem or a new one -- there's complaints lodged since 2012 on different models of Kindle for the same problem.  In super-layman's terms, the port isn't soldered in completely, so it's easily pushed into the machine and no longer makes connections with the charger.  Looking at the forums, there's a no-questions-asked replacement policy if you're under warranty or have the extended warranty.  I called Amazon CS and was basically told I'm SOL -- they'll give me $30 off a new one -- I'm not dumb, I didn't think they would replace it for nothing being 2 years old and out of warranty, but I was expecting them do something.  You'd think for a problem relatively common that people have been complaining about for years they'd have re-engineered the device so the problem would stop happening.
People sell the kits to fix it on eBay for $20 but I'd have to take it apart, which I'm not completely comfortable doing, even though there are about a thousand videos on YouTube showing how to solder it back into place.  I have an appointment at a cell phone repair shop that says they do this all the time, hopefully it's not expensive.  Sigh.
