Re: The Three - Rating

  • I gave it a 3 but as a neutral rating.  I still can't decide if I liked it or hated it so I am having a hard time with the rating of it.

I did exactly the same thing.  I'm not sad I read it, but it's not something I feel like I would really recommend.  It's more like I don't have any feelings at all about it.

  • I also gave it a 3, but in my review said I might want to up it to a 4 after I had some time to process.

I have had time, and I don't want to increase it.

Like you guys said, it wasn't bad, and for quite a bit of it, I really enjoyed the book.  The last 1/4 or so, though . . . I don't know.  I didn't love it in the end.
  • I thought it started strong then got crazy and lost me. I read it last year sometime, but I want to say I gave it 3 stars?

I think that's it. It starts strong, gets a little spooky, then the crazy talk starts and by the end you don't even care anymore.

You hit the nail right on the end.

  • I gave it four stars after my first read and bumped it up to five after reading it again a year later.

  • I'm wavering between 3 and 4. It was a solid 4 for the first half and then my interest waned. I guess I hoped for more of a horror-like conclusion.

One thing I did really love about this book though was the interview style format. I usually have a hard time getting into that, but I think Sarah Lotz pulled it off particularly well. It also had a curious effect for me. I guess I'm used to reading a lot of fantasy/ paranormal books where the main characters are involved in the creepy or supernatural stuff and I buy in so much because I identify with the main character. With the reporting style, there was a distance between me and the Three that created more room for doubt and let me react to the story unfolding in the way that I would if I were hearing all of these accounts in real life. It was a weird feeling knowing the religious crazies were actually sort of right about what had happened in the crashes. Anyway, I think that was my favorite thing about the book: a different lens to view a paranormal story through.
