Sort of MM-related: Towels?

I am starting to think about budgeting for us to purchase new towels. We have had our current towels for about 3 years; they are Martha Stewart brand from Macys. They are really losing their softness and the edges are starting to come unraveled.

I prefer to purchase all of our towels at one time, since then I know they are all matching (because I am OCD like that). I'm not planning to purchase them for a few months because I will need to save up for them--possibly in the spring if I get a bonus at work.

So, does anybody have some nice bath towels they recommend? I don't want to go too cheap, because H and I really value fluffy towels that will last a while. I'd like them to last longer than 3 years. However, I don't want over the top expensive either.

I don't live near ANY store that sells bath towels other than Walmart and Kmart, so I will most likely need to purchase them online.

Ours are probably considered over the top, but we love them. We buy the 820-gram towels from Pottery Barn.

I wouldn't call them soft and fluffy, exactly, but they are very heavy and do an amazing job wicking water. I have found the really fluffy towels tend not to absorb water as well.

We have had them for nearly three years (wedding gift), and they have held up great. I would think we'll get another couple of years out of them (at minimum) before we need to replace them.

They are expensive, but worth every penny. PB usually has a white sale in January... You can also find a lot of PB stuff on ebay.

FYI, "special" means its on a seasonal sale, "sale" means they are clearing out that color:

We got Fieldcrest Luxury from Target for our shower over 2 years ago and they are still going strong. They are nice and fluffy. I think they are Target's version of Macy's Hotel brand because H had the Macy's hand towels and they are nearly identical to the Target towels (3 "stripes" vs 4).

We got the bath sheets and they are like the size of a twin blanket. We are tall so we love that they are big but they take up a lot of room in the washer.

we love these ones from JCPenny's. They hold up great and dry wonderfully but aren't super heavy either, so they dry quickly. If you watch for sales, you can get them for great prices. Last year on black Friday online we got the bath sheet for $4.00 online. We don't go to any stores on black Friday, we do all our shopping online for the same great prices & most stores even offer free shipping then too.

We have ones from Kohls that I really like. They're Vera Wang brand and so soft yet absorbant.

Watch Black Friday sales. You can usually find some good towels for a reasonable price then.

reviews say they don't dry well...but my guess is those are washed with fabric softener...any towel washed with fabric softener will loose it's absorbancy.

I'm eyeing up the Field Crest towels as well. Our current towels, a wedding gift, are almost 8 years old. We're hoping to buy a bigger home next year so I'm holding off until then.

One thing we have found to be helpful in keeping our towels in great shape is to avoid fabric softener in the washer, but we do use half of a dryer sheet in the dryer. Also about once a month I put vinegar in the fabric softener compartment of my washer. Helps get rid of build up, etc.

Just wanted to second the Fieldcrest towels from Target. I've had some for 8 years and they still look nice (they're not used daily but still used enough by guests).

I know this isn't an option for you in WY, but I also really like our Charisma towels we got at Costco.

Side note, lack of stores is one of the main reason I told H we could never live in his hometown of Rock Springs LOL!

LOL! A very important consideration. It is one of the reasons I want to retire somewhere else

ETA: Do you know if Charisma is the same brand everywhere? H's aunt in CA has some Charisma towels that I am totally in love with (I looked at the tag last time we visited because I love them so much), but I don't know where she purchased them. I searched Charisma online and found several places that sell towels labeled 'Charisma' but I'm not sure how to tell if they are the same towels.

For those of you that use the Fieldcrest from Target, can you tell me if the bands shrink? H's pet peeve is when the band part of the towel shrinks and makes the end of the towels scrunch up. For this reason, I've always tried to find towels without the decorative band--which are hard to find.

You know I'm not entirely sure. I also buy the Charisma sheets at Costco and they seem to be the same quality as the ones I've purchased from Bloomingdale's in the past, but I'm not 100% sure on the towels. My guess is they are, they just cost more from other stores. Our Target towels are going strong! Nice variety of color options too. Check out Cartwheel - the free Target coupon program. They may put towels on there on a rotating basis. Could be anywhere from 5-30% off.

We bought ours at Target too- we always get white so the color doesn't fade. No complaints here.

If your towels are in good shape, but aren't as fluffy, wash them on hot with a cup of vinegar, then another cycle on hot with a 1/2 cup of baking soda. Dry normally and they come out brand new.

Interesting! I am going to try this. Might as least make them tolerable until we can get new ones. They've gotten pretty scratchy/uncomfortable.

Our towels are from Bed & Bath and Beyond that we received from our registry, which was 3 years ago. They still look and feel like new, except for slight fading. But they are dark purple, so that's expected. I'd assume a lighter-colored towel wouldn't show fading. I'll have to look at the name of the brand at home.

I looked last night and couldn't really tell, so at this point (about 2 years old) I don't think so. Now I usually dry them on permanent press, have 3 sets and am pretty gentle with them overall.

I only have 1 from Target with the decorative band and yes the band part of the towel scrunched up. Just avoid the ones with the band. Overall I'm really pleased with Target towels.
