So he was the Marine who killed Hiro. WHY??? Who told him to do that? Why did he leave the Marines? Did I miss something?

They were but then the apocalypse guy said to stop emailing him and then... He kills Hiro? I feel like I missed a chapter.

I think Pastor Len convinced him to do it. That's what all those emails were about. Something he saw at the crash in Japan made him a little crazy.

My take was that his emails with Pastor Len inspired it. He thought Hiro was a sign of the end times and evil and his conversations with Len confirmed it. It pushed him over the edge.

He also had a phone call with Pastor Len that was mentioned, but we never know what the content of that conversation was - I assume it was a chat about Hiro.

I assumed that as well. But I also feel like Jake joining in with the religious fanatics all of the sudden came out of nowhere. In the beginning he seemed to be grieving, but not to the extent where he'd go and do something like kill a little boy.
