Infant vs. Convertible car seat

I've started the research into car seats, and I really really like one of the convertible ones that says it goes down to a five lb weight. Is there a downside to having just a convertible? Is it really worth the extra money to have the infant car seat?

I prefer the infant car seat. Ours was the infant carrier that snapped into the car seat base and also snapped into the stroller. It was really nice because if Abby fell asleep in the car seat we could just pick the seat off the base and put it on the stroller when we went into the store or where ever we were going. I didn't get a convertible seat for her until she turned 1.

It comes down to personal preference. Like Megan said the infant seat is convenient if baby is asleep and you have a stroller that takes a car seat. It also works great when you go out to eat.... as long as baby is happy sitting in it.

Since I baby wear our infant seat doesn't leave the car much when we are out and about. Emerson will likely move to a convertible by years end.

Your baby will be just as safe in a convertible from the start.

I liked having the infant seat. Many times we brought it into the house when she fell asleep.

The infant carrier is so awesome for being able to put the baby in inside the house and carry them out. And then from the car to the stroller or shopping cart. And from said stroller/cart back to the car and then from the car back to the house. Especially when little one falls asleep. We just got the first of two convertibles (we're getting one for each of the two primary vehicles).

Another good point. Makes for a nice infant seat in restaurants or just one less chance of waking them up if you eat out.

We are gonna go with an infant seat. It's worth it to us.

I agree with everyone here. I had the same thoughts because well it saves money, but it is worth it to us.

It is definitely cheaper to just get the convertible, but you also need to look at time/convenience and that's worth a lot. I will also say at least with our cars, the convertibles are a lot bigger and in our case makes it a little more difficult to get him in/out of the seat vs the infant seat. I think a large part of that is that we have it tipped more upright which seems to make Ryan happier.

Late to the convo but I agree with everything said about the convenience of an infant seat. Lily moved to a convertible seat rear facing at about 8 months old and there were times I missed the infant seat. I also loved and used the heck out of my Ergo.

Thanks for the opinions. J and I have been having a lot of discussions about it, and we still aren't sure which way we are going to lean.
