NMMR: New York

edited November 2015 in Money Matters
It seems like there's quite a few travelers on this board so I thought I'd ask this here if you don't mind. Has anyone been to NYC during the Christmas season? I've been there twice but H has never been. Is it worth going to see the lights and decorations if I've been there already? H is indifferent so I thought I'd ask for opinions here. Thanks!!

Edited for words.

Re: NMMR: New York

  • I think it depends on how far away you live and what else you want to get out of the trip. If you're within a few hours drive or bus ride, or you have people you can stay with, and you'd enjoy a NYC trip anyway, I think December is a nice time to go. I loathe NYC in the hot summer, but December is usually before the snow kicks in and the decorations are nice. To me, though, they aren't so spectacular that I'd fly across the country just for that purpose.

I've never been able to get anywhere near Rockefeller Center ice skating at Christmas time, however, and I hate crowds too much to try. If you do go, I'd get tickets for either the Rockettes or the Christmas Carol musical.
  • I personally love NYC in December!! Especially if I'm going with someone who has never been before. ((NYC for New Years Eve was something I would never do again though, the crowds and smells and prices were ridiculously absurd.))

I agree with PP that I wouldn't necessarily fly cross-country for the experience though. I luckily live only a few hour train ride away so it's a great trip for a long weekend. You can also keep the trip pretty MM by shopping around for hotels (I used TripAdvisor) and paying in full in advance, chances are that you won't spend much time in the room anyway. I would also shop ahead and search resale sites for Broadway tickets and even try for any "tasting menu" promos at fancy restaurants.

  • DH and I went down the day after Christmas and stayed there until New Years Eve back in 2009. We stayed at the Bryant Park hotel with a view of the park so we could see the ice skaters, rink, and the park. We went out to a few nice dinners and went down to see the tree at Rockefeller Center. Spent most of the days walking around/shopping. It was awesome- we went right after I found out I was pregnant with DD#1 so it was a great babymoon. It's our favorite place to visit (and where we got engaged!).

  • I've never been to the City during Christmas season (it's a very busy time to go) but I grew up in Upstate New York, and if you are looking for the sites and sounds without the cost and people, you may want to consider heading north of the city.
Some towns in Upstate have small festivals and the like around Christmas time, and it's pretty popular in the area I grew up in to go to Hudson's Winter Walk, which features art from local artists, music, and some activities and specials from businesses in the area.
It's really quite lovely, and my mother still goes every year.

  • Thanks for all of your advice and ideas! I definitely would want to see a Broadway show and go ice skating. We live in Chicago so it's not exactly a cross country flight but it would still involve buying plane tickets. My cousin can get us buddy passes so that would help with the cost. We just can't decide if it's worth going to NYC, which will be just as cold as Chicago, for the lights or we should head south for some warmer weather. We just want to do a long weekend.
  • I have been twice in December, but it was because I had a work trip.  :)  I stayed an extra night both times to go explore.

There is a lot of neat things to see for free (windows at Macy's, tree at Rockafeller Plaza, etc) but the sights are crowded on the weekends because everyone else is doing the same thing.

If you live "nearby" and it isn't too expensive to travel there then I would go.  My mom came up with me for my first trip (she paid for the extra hotel night since work covered the other nights).  It was my first trip to NYC so in addition to seeing the holiday stuff I wanted to see the normal stuff. :)

We used to go between Christmas and New Years every year.  That's actually a great time to go because until NYE, the city is pretty empty.

Be prepared for crowds before Christmas, but all the decorations and ice skating at Rockefeller Center are definitely worth it.  I agree that the Rockette show is super fun!  Midtown gets a nice "holiday feel".

We were just in the city last week and saw Something Rotten on Broadway.  I would recommend it- super funny!  Very similar humor to The Producers.

Obviously I'm biased, but NOLA is an awesome city for NYE.  We drop a lighted Fleur De Lis for the countdown.  The FQ is completely packed.  There are fireworks over the MS River and bonfires along its levee.  We're also a city that decorates big for every holiday, so there are fantastic Xmas displays everywhere.  It can be chilly, but no snow.

Now watch, just because I said that, it is going to snow this NYE, lol.  We get one day of snow like once every 5-10 years.

I've also been to Vegas on NYE.  That's another good time.  The casinos all do it up big, lots of fireworks, and everyone is hanging out all along the Strip for the countdown.
