Re: Goodreads Choice Awards

  • I love voting but there were so many categories where I hadn't read a single book nominated.

  • Voting always reminds me how limited my reading is.  I mean, I just read what I like, but it always makes me feel like I should branch out more.

Same here. I tell myself every year that I am going to branch out but never do. Maybe I should commit to a genre challenge next year?

  • I read more books in the humor category than any other. I was surprised about that.

  • I've only read one book on the list (I Was Here), however I'm excited to get more ideas. I like the idea of a genre challenge. Do the group reads typically focus on one genre, or do they rotate for variety?

    Looooooove this time of year!

I'm so sad though - this is the first year that I haven't read a single one of the best fiction selections.  And I've read some amazing fiction this year!  I do have A Little Life, The Royal We, and Did You Ever Have a Family on my TBR.

  • There are also a few I was delighted to see:
Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter (Mystery/Thriller)
    Alice (Horror)
    Searching for Sunday (Memoir/Autobiography)
Ravensbruck and When Books Went to War (History/Biography)
Nimona, Soppy, and Step Aside Pops (Comics/Graphic Novels)

  • One more note: As I'm reading through the summaries of each one, deciding what to add to my TBR, I can't help noticing how many of the humor, memoir, and autobiographies are by "internet sensations" or "YouTube stars".

  • I voted this morning and all I thought was, I really haven't read enough this year or enough new books.

I think I got to vote in 2 categories.

Usually this is me too but I apparently read a lot of popular books this year.

  • I think the only categories where I'd read more than one were YA fantasy and fantasy. I had a tough time deciding between Trigger Warning and A Darker Shade of Magic, but surprised myself and went with the latter. I wish they'd break out romance into a few more subcategories. Amish romance and NA aren't really each other's competitors here.

Does anyone know where the initial slate comes from? Is it from Goodreads' user nominations or Goodreads employees or what?

YES! It's not a bad thing...buuut I would like to see I don't know how to say it a political figure, an Oprah, even an everyday joe nobody who did something fantastic (i.e. Cheryl Strayed/Wild) win an award. Perhaps they need an additional category for the memoir's for the internet sensations and youtube stars, maybe even comedians and TV hosts (say a Chelsea Handler book) that are more observational humor than a life story?

Right.  I have no judgment on the matter, it just intrigued me.  It surprised me how few of them I've even heard of and yet they're billed like celebrities.  It made me wonder if I'm just that much out of the loop.

  • I'm shocked at how many I've read!  Woo hoo for Overdrive keeping me in the know ;)

  • I hate to say it, but fewer people are reading these days. They probably push the internet and youtube celebrities because more people will be interested to read what they have to say than a Hilary Clinton or Condoleeza Rice...sad.
