Recommandations

So. I've started the search into baby gear.

Help me out. And teach me! Tell me what you've tried, what you've loved, what you don't love, any bits of info or advice.

1. Car seat. We want an infant one that comes with two bases (if that's possible) and that we can snap onto a stroller. Obviously safe and whatnot

2. Stroller. That will work with the car seat listed above. Nothing super fancy needed.

3. I'm considering getting some sort of baby wearing device for when we are out and about and baby wants nothing to do with the stroller. Or it's just easier to use it. Or for the times when baby just wont settle down but I need to get stuff done. I'm probably not going full blown baby wearing (nothing wrong with it, just not for me).

4. Bottles. I know a lot of this depends on what he will want when he gets here...but start me off.

5. any other random things that you couldn't live out/didn't think you would need.

Thank you guys!

Re: Recommandations

  • 1 & 2.We had an Evenflo Travel System. We still have and use the stroller. Here is the link from Walmart.com

    3. I didn't baby wear at all. We had a carrier, but I took it back because it was too complicated and we didn't like it.

    4. We used the Gerber Bottles. They come in a pack of 3 for like $4 or something. I had some evenflo bottles I bought at a consignment shop I really like, but they were an older model.

    5. I really liked having the rock and play. I plan on using it again for the next baby.

  • 1. We had a Graco travel system. It came with the car seat, base, and stroller. Then we purchased an additional base.

    2. A Graco stroller that is part of a travel system will be good, but you may also want a smaller light weight stroller for when he is a little older. We bought one that was a Combi and we love it! It is especially nice for when we travel.

    3. Ergo is great for baby wearing.

    4. We used glass bottles by Evenflo. Glass is so much better than plastic! When she got a little older (6 months) we switched to the Life Factory glass bottles. They are awesome.

    5. A baby swing is a must. We got a little swing that was low to the ground. She loved it.

  • 1 & 2 - we got a graco travel system. Car seat, stroller and one base. We never bought a second base but you can. Still use the stroller for Lily and planning to use the car seat for this next one.

3 - I have a moby and I'm not a fan. I have a woven wrap and an Ergo. While I like my woven, I love my Ergo. So easy to put on and take off. Super comfy. I've heard some people don't like the fit of the Ergo but love another brand (Tula, Beco, ect). Maybe see if you have a baby wearing group/library locally. We have one and you can pay a monthly fee to check out different wraps and carriers. Cheaper than buying one and finding out you hate it.

4 - no help on bottles. We have some but Lily never used them.

5 - other than my Ergo my favorite baby item was probably my breastfeeding pillow.

  • 1 and 2: We got the Chicco Keyfit / Travel system.  That or the Graco will work.  We just liked the Keyfit better.  As said before, the infant seat is a big help and clicks right into the stroller.

The umbrella stroller is nice, but you don't need to have that right off the bat.  We didn't use it until Ryan was able to sit on his own and hold his head up.

    3. We don't baby wear most of the time.  But we do have a basic carrier that we use now and then.  We tried a couple, but to us they were all sorta bulky and clunky.  Easier to just pick him up and hold him for us.  So we rarely use it.

    4. We use the medela bottles, but only because that is the breastpump we used.  So it was just easier to have everything all the same.

    5.  I saw mentions of bouncers, swings, etc.  Unless someone gets you one for a gift, I'd wait until you have the baby.  Take them to the store and put them in the ones there and see how they take to it.  Joy insisted on having one of these vibrating rocker things.  We put it on the registry and someone bought it.  Ryan could have cared less.  It sits in a corner with stuff on it.

  • Thanks guys! This for sure gives me a good start. I know I'm getting a few hand me downs from my sister in law like a swing and whatnot. If he hates it, we try another one = ).

  • I agree with @jtmh2012 about the swing. Abby didn't like the swing at all. I ended up selling it to consignment early one because she wasn't a fan. I did get a lot of use out of the bouncy chair. It was nice to be able to put Abby in before she was mobile so I could take a shower or cook dinner without worrying about her.

  • She's giving me one of Those too. So hopeful he will like one of them. And if he doesn't, we improvise lol.

  • For the ergo, what point did your baby get to around 33 lbs? I'm right in the middle of researching carriers, and I like the ergo, except for the weight limit.

Liliana is only 27 lbs now and she is 2 years, 5 months, so I could still use the Ergo if I wanted to.

  • Our infant seat is the Chico key fit 30 and our convertible seats are chichi nextfit.

Our stroller is the city select by baby jogger. Pricey but worth it in my opinion. When Emerson came along I didn't have to shop for a double stroller, just had to buy an extra seat.

Babywearing.... I loved the baby k'tan for when my kids were Itty bitty. It's easy to use and comfy. My main go to carrier is a lillebaby and can be used from birth without an infant insert. I recently received a beco ring sling. So far I am loving it and Emerson seems to be a fan too. I highly suggest (like Michelle said) to hit up a Babywearing group and rent a few to see what works best for you. There are so many options and everyone likes something different.

Bottles are totally a baby preference! I have about 5 different types sitting in my kitchen leftover from Caden. The bottles that he had an issue with Emerson hasn't had a problem with.

As far as all the extras I recommend hitting up a consignment sale, that way you can try things out and not go broke in the process.

  • Graco modes for 1 and 2.  We love it.

The playtex air flow bottles are awesome, but the new ones that we can only find are not great.  They are too big/fast.

I have the boba wrap but we don't use it often. She does fine in it but she tends to be too heavy for me.

Also, I love pampers diapers.  I think I said this in the baby sticky thread.
  • Thanks for checking. I was hoping it would be more local but oh well. I'll think about going

  • Jen, me too! I loved pampers for Lily. They fit her the best.

I also agree on using hand me downs or consignment shopping for stuff like swings, bouncers, ect. We bought a swing and a bouncer at the consignment shops and Lily never really loved either. So we got rid of them when we moved (to save on storage). I'm honestly debating even getting one this go round. I know it all depends on the baby. I like Mark's suggestion of trying out the swings and stuff at the store.

We also bought small packs of diapers to find ones that fit best.  Then started buying the big boxes, but don't buy too many at first.  Ryan changed sizes rapidly until he got to size 4...

I have some newborn hybrids that I made that I'd be happy to send you. They have a generous fit, Emerson wore them from 10lbs at birth until about 12lbs but there was still plenty of room for her to wear then longer. They probably still fit but I just prefer the one size diapers now that she fits into those.

How many diapers you want depends on how often you want to wash them and what type you use.

Just remember that newborns go through 12ish diapers a day and they go through less as they get older.

Yep, completely agree, Mark. I've heard of people stocking up on boxes and boxes of diapers.  We used what was gifted to us and then figured out what kind we liked best.  Lily went through those first sizes pretty quickly.  I had her in size 4 by 1 year old.  She probably would have been fine in size 3 for a bit longer but I had a box of size 4 my mom gifted to us so I switched her.  She's still in size 4 during the day when she isn't wearing a pull up.

  • Yeah, Ryan went through diapers pretty quick, but the big boxes are pretty big and we still had enough time to decide if we were getting another box or going up a size.  Sometimes we'd buy one of the current size and next size if they were having a buy 2 get a gift card deal.

That would be awesome! I think I read that 36 is a good number to start with.

And how did you make some? I might have time to do that when I'm done with work!
