Less visits to the library?

I drove by my local library last night on my way to vote. Realized I haven't been there in so long and didn't want to stop since I have so many books on hold on Overdrive and so many paper books on the shelf to read. Do you find digital/e-books and Overdrive have kept you away from the library more? I have to say I miss the feeling of being around the books and the quiet space. Also Julie I know you're a Librarian, I don't mean to stay away!

Re: Less visits to the library?

  • Yes, absolutely.  I used to drop the by library 2-3 times a week.  I still go, but more like once and it's more for movies and books for Wes.  Hardly ever for me.  I get 90% of my books from Overdrive.  I pretty much only request the physical copy if Overdrive doesn't have it or if it's a ridiculous wait.

I'm looking in to some of their events to participate it.  I really want to enter their cupcake bakeoff in March.  There's always been one reason or another why I couldn't in the past, but I REALLY want to this year.

  • I do make fewer trips to the library thanks to Overdrive but I still use it with some frequency and it's invaluable for research.

  • I've actually been reading more print lately than ebooks, but I find that I go back and forth.  And for my library at least (at a college, not a public library) use of online resources are just as important for our statistics as in person library usage.  We have to justify our costs on both to (ultimately) the govt. so we need people to use Overdrive or other e-sources if we want to keep including them in our budget!

  • No, but only because the kids still get books every two weeks. I get them far less because of Overdrive.

  • I go less than I used to, my local library changed their hours so it was nearly impossible for me to get there unless I made a special trip during my lunch break.  They have changed the hours again recently and are now open on Saturdays, so I've been meaning to swing by.

I do really love the library but I have a collection of my own and do use the overdrive service, I've tried to make an effort to read books I own, so this has meant less trips to the book store and the library.  I do love the experience of going to the library and wandering around the stacks.

  • I was just thinking this recently.  I just got a kindle over the summer, and while I find that I've been reading more, I'm definitely at the library less.  And most of the time that I'm there, it's to run in and pick up an audiobook or dvd that I had on hold, almost never to browse.

I also take the kids less than I used to.  But that might just be because we always go more often in the winter just because it's something indoors and free to do.
  • My DH and I were just talking about this the other day with how much we miss the Library! I am trying to get through my HUGE stack of TBR books I have on my bookshelf, which has prevented me from reading new or just browsing. I need to get my butt there...

I'm SO BAD about this, lol. We're back on our every-two-weeks schedule, but when it's warm we never go. I always have books that we've checked out in late spring until like July when I can somehow get them together and drop them in the slot on the way to being outside because CANT GO INSIDE BECAUSE IT WILL BE WINTER AGAIN SOMETIME.

I know, right?!?  They do have some pretty neat activities.  They just did one on the Tiny House movement.  Wes is finally getting to the appropriate age for some of the kids things so I'm really excited about that.

  • Trips to the library for myself? Definitely declined since I got my Kindle. And my mom started working there in January so if I have something on hold, she gets it for me. :)

But I'm usually there once a week with my daughter.

I never knew that. One point for OD is that the selection is higher. The only downside to my local library was that they didn't have a lot of stuff I wanted to read. Now that they have OD I think I read more because you have to finish the book in 2 weeks or else someone else needs it.

Our graduate orientation also includes a whole presentation and physical tour of the library, featuring information about online resources for distance students. Even if you're a face to face student you can't get to campus every day so use the library at home!
  • I don't think my trips have declined too much.  It's only been in the last year that my library has had a good ebook selection so I still get a lot of print books and I get movies for DD all the time.  I'm usually there about once a week.

  • So far no. We still go every week to every other week for dd and I prefer a physical book when I am in bed so most of my e-reader time is on my phone at work or when we are out.

  • I go through spurts. We do go regularly, but I also use overdrive a lot for myself and the kids when we can't make it. I tend to renew most books at least once just because we can't make it in to return them. For me, the convenience of ebooks is wonderful and I read more of them than physical books. If we can't make it to the library due to the kids' schedules, I can check out something that they can read on the iPad or my old nook. I prefer for them to read actual books but I'm so thrilled that they always want books that I'm ok with them reading ebooks if it keeps them reading!
