Not MM-related: holiday movies?

It looks like there are some solid movies coming out for the holidays.  I'm not usually one to go to the movies, but I might have to make an exception for the last Hunger Games movie and Spectre.

I would also kind of like to see The Big Short, but I might wait until it's out on Redbox or Amazon.

My husband is arranging a "dude date" for the new Star Wars movie.

Anybody else have a movie they are willing to pay to see?

Re: Not MM-related: holiday movies?

  • EDIT: I also might have to see Bridge of Spies this weekend.  I had been looking forward to that one for awhile!

  • We'll be doing Star Wars, in IMAX, after it's been out a few days. We've been rewatching the original trilogy to prepare. I haven't heard of Spectre or The Big Short, but I'll look into them! Hunger Games I love but can wait for Hulu for.

It's nice to have fellow people who are stingy about going to the movies around here!
  • Yeah, for $20 it has to be a legit movie.

Spectre is the new James Bond movie.  Probably the last one with Daniel Craig.  Gotta see that one.

I'm pretty sure The Big Short is about the single best investment that's ever been made in the history of Wall Street - some people figured out the housing crisis before it happened, bet against housing when it was really hot, and made a fortune on the 2008 crash. True story.

  • I am definitely going to see Spectre, I haven't seen a film since the Avengers movie this spring. I have a gift card from last Christmas! DH might see it too if I really like it.

DH really wants to see the Star Wars movie, hopefully together.  My parents are normally our babysitters but they have some health issues currently so we are taking turns going out.
  • DH has tickets for the new Star Wars movie.  He is going the day it opens with a friend because I have ZERO interest in seeing it.

We actually go to the movies fairly frequently depending on what is in theaters.  We will go see the last Hunger Games, Captain America: Civil War (May), Batman v Superman (Spring) and probably a few more.

DH is more into the movie experience than I am.  For the most part I'm okay waiting for Redbox so I can watch at home in my jammies with my feet propped up.  I like to lounge when I watch tv or a movie and I can rarely get comfortable in a theatre seat and I'm too cheap to pay for the upgraded seats that some theaters have.

  • I have another one to add.  I just learned that my favorite nerdy historical nonfiction book, In The Heart of the Sea, has been remade into a big budget movie starring Chris Hemsworth, AND it comes out the day after my birthday.  Sign me up!  I may make this my birthday date night activity.

The book is great for anyone with any interest in maritime history.  It's the true story that inspired Moby Dick, but a much more thrilling read in my opinion.
  • I am also a Hunger Games fan and am SO excited for the last movie to come out! Seriously, 4 years is a long time to drag out a trilogy. Hope it's great!
  • H and I love seeing movies, but it's obviously not very MM so we usually only do it in winter when boating season is over. We've already bought our tickets for Star Wars and I will definitely plan to see the Hunger Games.

I'm not at all interested in Star Wars, but H is and really wants me to see it with him, so I'm going anyway. I think my sister and BIL and then his brother and fiancé are coming too. It should be a good time regardless.

  • I also can't wait for the newest Hunger Games! I'm hoping that I'll be able to go see it with one of my sisters who are also fans since its the holidays and otherwise we are across the country from each other.

I've seen a few good previews lately but I think that I'll wait until I can rent them on iTunes or watch them on HBOGo. There are a few newer movies that I haven't seen that just made it to HBOGo so I've been having fun bundling up at home with H and watching "new" movies as the cold sets in around here.

  • Star Wars is the only movie I'd pay to see in a theater.  I grew up in a Star Wars nerd family, but H didn't.

I feel like the only movies worth paying to see are big action movies, since that experience is hard to replicate at home.  Otherwise I'm happy to wait til we can watch on DirectTV for a few dollars, or download from Amazon Prime.  We have a build-in surround sound system and AppleTV so it's a pretty good experience to watch at home.
  • I know for sure we'll go to see the Hunger Games.  I honestly don't even know the names of any other movies coming out.  We usually will go about once a month during the winter months, if there's something we want to see.
  • My H and I rarely go to the movies.  We just prefer to wait and be comfy at home.  But he was recently talking about wanting to see the Martian in a theatre.  I suspect he will want to see the new Star Wars move in a theatre also.

REALLY not MM, but I have been wanting to check out a new theatre style.  One of the local theatres jazzed themselves up about one year ago and now they have fancy, reclining leather seats with trays.  There is also food and bar service with in-seat delivery.  Sounds like a fun experience.

  • We just saw The Martian and we loved it. Back in my single days I saw movies all the time. I love going to the theater. And we've got a great local indie theater too, so there are lot's of options. But it's few and far between currently.

The only other movie I will probably go see this season is Hunger Games. I've gone to the last couple ones with my sister, so hopefully we can get another lady date together for it.

I would love to see Bridge of Spies. I absolutely hate all James Bond movies and I'm not really a Star Wars fan either. Other than that, I'd be game to see "Sisters" with Amy Poehler and Tina Fey. I'd also be interested in "Room," but I'd like to read the book first I think.

You may have mentioned this before and feel free not to answer if you aren't comfortable, do you live near Baltimore, MD? We just had one of those fancy theatres open near Baltimore a few months ago and I'm dying to go. Tickets aren't *that* much more than the regular movies and I think it would be pretty cool.

I remember someone else from this board is near Baltimore too, I can't remember who.

No, that isn't me.  I live in NOLA.

I was actually pleasantly surprised at the prices.  The tickets are a few dollars more, but not too bad.  The food and drinks are a touch pricy, but not as bad as I had thought.  The alcoholic beverages are actually fairly typical "nicer bar" prices.  The gourmet sandwiches are about $15 and the apps are around $10-$11.  They also have three different flavors of popcorn to choose from.  Regular ($5), parmesan with truffle oil ($7.50), and chocolate peanut butter ($7).

So if I think of it more as a date night with dinner and a movie...because it is...it "feels" better than to say we spent $80-$100 at the movies, lol.

  • Its been a LONG time since there's been a movie I've been willing to pay to see in the theater...I think "Saving Mr. Banks" is the last one I saw in the theater that I paid for with my own money.

My parents live near a theater that normally has live shows, but they recently renovated to put in a huge HD projector/screen and bose surround sound.  It's a gorgeous performing venue (I performed The Nutcracker there as a child). The are totally bringing back the movie experience, their concession stand has great snacks and sells beer and wine, it's really a lovely experience to go. We've been to see "Captain Phillips" and "The Theory of Everything" on my parent's dime there. I think if we lived closer we'd do that more often.

H wants to go see Star Wars in IMAX...and wants me to come...maybe other moms can help me out here...but really is it a smart idea to bring a newborn to a movie? H is inclinded to think that if I put her in the Ergobaby carrier she'll likely sleep the whole time...and I could feed her if she gets hungry.

  • This weekend we are going to see the James Bond movie for a date night.  We want to take DD to see the new peanuts movie.  Of course Star Wars as DD and DH are obsessed.  We already bought tickets for it.

How new will she be? My kids definitely would sleep through, my 3 month old still falls asleep the moment she is in her carrier. You never know though, if she cries you'll have to forfeit the ticket money which would be disappointing.
  • We are absolutely going to the hunger games. I just checked with my babysitter today to see if he is available for the Saturday after it comes out. That obviously adds to it, so we won't be going to many this holiday season.

I took DD to a winnie the pooh movie when she was 3 months old and she passed out within 30 minutes.  If its a short movie I don't think it would be a problem but star wars is longer.  Also won't yours be a newborn by then - I don't think I would - blow out diapers, lots of spit up, feeding, cranky - too much can happen.

She would be just weeks old. the closest IMAX is 45 minutes from our house, I'm just picturing this being an overwhelming family trip, and maybe I should encourage H to find a friend to go with.

  • Star wars.
    Hunger games.

We might take the kids to see the Good Dinosaur.
  • We go to movie previews for free all the time so it is even more rare for us to pay for a movie (we could have actually seen Spectre for free Wednesday night at a preview).  However, friends asked us to go to Spectre tomorrow so we will pay for that.  Not really though because BIL gave me Fandango gift cards a couple of years ago and we are finally using those.

We would pay for Star Wars tickets for when we are in FL for Christmas, but BIL already bought them for all of us.

Adding two to my list after seeing trailers this week... I would LOVE to see Spotlight and I also think Brooklyn looks good.
