NMMR- King comforter on queen bed?

Good morning!

Not really MM related, but would it look odd to have a king size comforter on a queen size bed? Here's my dilemma, we currently have a full/queen on our bed which is 90x90" it's getting a little old and the stuffing is bunching up at the top so I want to replace it. The new comforter I like is a true queen but it's actually smaller than what we have now, I believe it's 86x90". Our current comforter doesn't come down far enough on the sides to cover our mattress which I hate, so I'm considering getting a king. Would it look odd to put a king size comforter on a queen bed? Also it comes with king size shams, so I'm wondering if that would look weird too. Has anyone else done this?

Thanks in advance :D I have a feeling I'm over thinking this...

Re: NMMR- King comforter on queen bed?

  • My in-laws did this when they had a queen and it looked fine. We were going to do the same thing, but bought a queen one from LLBean (measurements are 88X96) instead- it fits fine, DH and I don't have any issues with not having enough of the comforter. We did splurge on a box spring cover from PB so it looks nice and clean with our bed frame.

  • Assuming you're not ordering online, I'd go buy it, throw it on the bed and see what you think.  If you don't like it, it's simple to return it.

This is what I'm thinking I'll do too. I'm planning to order online from Kohls but their return policy is awesome, so I'm not worried about any hassle with returning.

Awesome thanks! I need to buy a fitted sheet to cover our box spring still. That would also help with the problem.  Our bed sits pretty high with the box spring and mattress so I'm thinking a wider comforter would be best to cover the sides.
  • We have a queen comforter on our queen bed and I soooo wish we could get a king size comforter. It doesn't come down very far on the sides at all and it was fine before we shared a bed, but now, I feel like one of us is always short of comforter.
  • Not odd at all.  I buy all of our bedding (except sheets) in King size to go on our queen bed because I like the look and coziness of them draping over the sides.
  • I could take a picture tonight if you want to see what a Queen bed looks like with a King comforter on it.
  • Go for it!!! It will cover the mattresses better and the best part is, extra blanket length reduces the battle of the blanket at night (which we usually  both loose at due to the dogs...lol).

  • It looks fine, we had it that way at our old house, and also have it on our current guest bed that way.  We have a king size bed now and I wish our comforter was larger.  Pic below is kind of small but that's how it looked at our old house.

  • we've totally done this, it didn't look bad. I actually now have the same king-sized quilt on a twin-bed in our nursery, it touches the floor on 3 sides and is folded down at the head, it looks a little off, but not terribly.

Do you put king size pillows on too? I'm more worried about the look of the king size pillow shams... The comforter set I'm looking at comes with the shams already, so I'm hoping that king size pillows would fit on my queen bed.

our king sized pillows have space between them on our king-sized bed (other beds in the house are a Full and a twin) I would assume they would fit OK on a queen, they'd probably take-up the whole width of the bed.

  • I've always had a queen bed and have always used a king size comforter.  To me, a true queen size comforter looks too small on a queen mattress.

However, I'm going to upgrade to a King or CA King fairly soon and I'm worried I'll be right back to comforters that are too small, lol.  I might have to buy two of the same comforter and that way I can have one and my H can have one!

In the picture above, I had queen size pillows and shams on it.  King gets a bit too smushed together looking in my opinion.  I don't buy shams that perfectly match the bedding though (like you'd get in a "bed in a bag set", I like to mix and match.
  • Do it!  I always bought king size blankets/comforter for our queen size bed.

Now that we have a king, I wish there was something bigger we could get for blankets.

We just use standard size pillows.  I try to avoid buying sets for this reason, but I do have some king pillow shams and I just don't use them.  In a pinch of the others are in the laundry, I will use them and fold them over and they don't look that bad.
