NMMR/GTKY/Small Vent: How Do You Get Excited For Thanksgiving
With Thanksgiving tomorrow, I find myself with the dilemma I have each year that I have a hard time getting excited for this holiday. I have so much to be thankful for, and love the idea of a holiday to give thanks, but in practice I just have a tough time getting excited for it. This year there's also a cloud over the holiday on H's side since his uncle passed away the day after Thanksgiving last year. It's going to be a hard day for his mom tomorrow. H had some rough Thanksgivings growing up, far beyond the annoying ones that I have had, so he doesn't love the holiday either.
I'm really determined to keep working on enjoying Thanksgiving and appreciating it for what it is. With that said, how do you get excited for Thanksgiving? Do you have any fun traditions that make it special for you? My favorite traditions so far aren't really related to the day so much as the prep. I love doing a big food pantry shop during Thanksgiving week, doing a turkey trot on Thanksgiving morning, and baking the night before. I want to move beyond feeling like I'm just going through the motions on the actual day itself.
Re: NMMR/GTKY/Small Vent: How Do You Get Excited For Thanksgiving
Aw, I'm sorry for your loss. Holidays are always tough without loved ones as the years go on.
I agree with you...I really have a hard time being excited for Thanksgiving. I'm thankful for everyone and everything that I have everyday so thanksgiving day isn't really any different...plus I don't even like turkey lol. I look forward to seeing family and eating stuffing though. The only reason Thanksgiving excites me is because Christmas is right around the corner and we decorate right after.
Sorry, this isn't very helpful. But, you're not alone in being somewhat indifferent toward Thanksgiving.
H and I only see our families a handful of times per year so that alone is enough to make me excited.
Time off of work is also a very happy thing for me
My mom and I bake together and I love that time we spend together. We also like looking at the decorations and serving wear that we only use during this time of the year and remembering the fun stories we have behind some of these things.
During the holiday season it always make H and I feel good to give back. We do a shift bell ringing for the Salvation Army. The SA helped both of our families back in the day (our parents' generation) and it makes us thankful for how much we have.
We also do a game where everyone writes down their most horrific thing that happened at their family Thanksgiving this year, and puts it into the hat. They all get read, and we have to guess which persons' family had that happen. It's hilarious.

@brij2006, Your Friendsgiving sounds like a ton of fun!
I'm not a big holiday person, in general. But I like them all just fine. Like @smetter04 said, my favorite thing about TG is it is the door to the only 4-day weekend (outside of taking vacation days). I LOVE a whole cooked turkey and stuffing. I love having the best turkey sandwiches for the entire week after it.
If it's a tough holiday for you both, talk about what would make it more enjoyable for you as a couple. It could be the perfect time to start your own traditions.
My cousin used to dread Thanksgiving because she moved half way across the country but she and her husband soon realized many of their friends were in the same boat with no family nearby. They started hosting Friendsgiving. Each year they do a different menu. Her husband is from Costa Rica so one year they did a menu of his favorites. They have a diverse group of friends so they love trying new things.
Our friends have their parents and siblings over for Thanksgiving each year. They plan their Black Friday shopping, figure out who will ride in what car, etc. They start bright and early Friday morning. They love it!
I would like that, too! I'd really like to try cooking some minor twists on Thanksgiving favorites. Nothing crazy-spicy Brussels sprouts, butternut squash ravioli, etc. I know it can be a bit fraught to mess with the standards, though.
