Long weekend/holiday plans?

What are you plans for this glorious long weekend?!

Re: Long weekend/holiday plans?

  • Thursday- Thanksgiving at my parents. H is working double time and a half for 12 hours so he's missing out on the food but not the money!$!

Friday- Vet apt, cleaning the house, bringing out Xmas décor, a few things around the house

    Saturday- Decorating for Christmas

Sunday- Dog grooming apt, Going to see Transiberian Orchestra (so excited!)

  • Thursday-Turkey trot, Thanksgiving with my ILs and then Thanksgiving with my parents in the evening

Friday-Not an official day off unless I want to use a vacation day.  However, I have to see my eye doctor in the morning, and my eye doctor is at the mall, so odds are I'll only work about half a day from home.  Hoping to get some good work clothes on sale.

Saturday-Probably a relaxing day at home.  We may start decorating, but don't typically get our tree until the first weekend in December.  At night, I'll go out to celebrate my best friend's birthday with her FI and their friends.

Sunday-Hoping to keep it low key and get stuff done around the house.  Plus, we always spend most of the day watching football.  I made my fantasy league's playoff for the first year so that's exciting for me.  H didn't and is very sick of hearing about it.
  • This afternoon we're making the cranberries and sweet potatoes. Tomorrow we're headed to my parents for Thanksgiving Day. Friday we're going to do Black Friday with them in the morning (my dad gets into it), and then headed to my inlaws for leftovers that afternoon. Saturday we're coming back home and decorating for Christmas. Sunday I take my last final of the year (whew), and I'll probably get our Christmas cards ready to mail. We might go see Catching Fire Sunday afternoon. Pretty relaxed weekend for us, and we're looking forward to it!

  • Thursday - mini thanksgiving just the two of us, decorating for xmas, probably while binge watching "Man in the High Castle" on Amazon.

Friday - head off in the morning to my parent's house 2 hours away. Watch Mizzou lose to Arkansas and then have family thanksgiving meal with my parents and sib families. Trying to connect with a highschool friend who is in town from Ohio.

Saturday - lazy day with the family just hanging out and playing with the nieces and nephews. Might go to church Saturday night with my parents.

Sunday - stopping by for a visit with two more high school friends then head home.
  • Tonight-Getting stuff prepped for tomorrow and having a girls night with my best friends

Thanksgiving- Turkey Trot (hoping it doesnt rain) if it does, I will be hitting the gym. Then family lunch at 2pm, all of H's family will be here plus my mom and Brother (hosting like 20+ people, majority of them being young kids).

Friday-Some Hot Yoga and some black friday shopping--maybe that night go out with a few friends for a bit.

Saturday- Gym time with my friend, then probably putting Xmas stuff out. Then I have a 2nd bday party for my Best friends little boy.

    Sunday-NOTHING

  • Tonight - Bake cookies for Thursday

Thursday - Watch the parade with the kids (DS is super excited about the new Angry Birds balloon), go to DH's family's Thanksgiving dinner

Friday - Go to my family's Thanksgiving dinner

Saturday - Set up Christmas decorations!

    Sunday - Church and relaxing : )
  • I don't have a long weekend, but I can't wait to put my Christmas stuff out! I'll do it tomorrow since H is working a full shift and my family doesn't get together. Then it's back to work Friday and Saturday. Sunday we'll likely finish up our Christmas shopping. Then I'll wrap everything so I can look at it under the tree. I LOVE Christmastime.

  • Tonight: Picking up DD from the sitter then heading to my parents to veg out in their hot tub and split a bottle of wine.  It's been an emotional week as we gear up for yet another holiday without my brother.  So I want to spend some time with them while there isn't a house full of people.

Tomorrow: Lunch at the in-laws, then dinner at my parents.

Friday: My BFF will be in town, so she'll come over and hang out.  I need to clean the house and prep some food for Friendsgiving as well.

    Saturday: Friendsgiving!  All day long.

Sunday: Church then we're going to get our Christmas tree.  First time getting a real one, so this could be interesting.

  • Tonight: Going to a hockey game

Tomorrow: Hosting friends for the usual dinner.  Also have some other friends coming over around 10 for mimosas and some snacky breakfast that they're bringing, they have another dinner to go to later on in the day.

Friday: Putting out my Christmas decorations... have a new tree so I'm excited to see how it looks!  Also might hit up a few stores in the afternoon/evening to try and add to my work clothing.

Saturday: No plans during the day, maybe take our RZR out for a ride if it isn't too cold.  Hockey game in the evening.

Sunday: No plans either, probably will just do the usual stuff... a bit of grocery shopping if needed, laundry, and be lazy.
  • Tonight: Make brown sugar cheesecake and stuffing for Friday.

Thursday: Make green bean casserole for dinner with my dad's side of the family. Then home to prep Brussels sprouts and veggies to go in the turkey and make glazed pearl onions for Friday. Finish cleaning for Friday.

Friday: I am hosting my first Thanksgiving for me and DH's parents and siblings. I don't know what brown sugar cheesecake is, but it sounds scrumptious!

Today:  off work at 11:00AM.  Pick up script.  Take cat to vet.  Finally go TG shopping.  I am already dreading the packed grocery store hatefulness.

Thursday:  Cooking TG dinner...though we might be making beer can chicken instead of turkey because I was too busy all week to get a turkey and now it won't thaw in time.  But still making all the rest of the fixings.  Planning to cook the bird on Sunday, instead.

Friday:  Veg out at home drinking spiked apple cider.  Maybe I'll do some work around the house.  Maybe.

Saturday: p/t job in morning then work around the house.

Sunday:  Veg out day.  Cook turkey if I didn't do it on TG.  More spiked apple cider.

  • @Xstatic3333  I have no clue what I'm doing with one. lol.  Just water it, right?
I'm lucky to remember to give the dog and cat water, let alone water a tree. It's going to be brown before Christmas.

There was a year when my parent's tree just wouldn't drink water.  It was crazy.  They filled it up, and it didn't absorb anything.

The tree did make it through Christmas, but we were finding needles for months after moving it out because just touching it would cause the needles to fall off.

By the end there we were kind of afraid the lights would catch the whole thing on fire, so we stopped turning the lights on the week before.

Haha yes, keep it watered. Maybe keep a cell phone alarm, or do it when you feed your dog or something. I top ours off morning and night. Another tip is to saw off the bottom inch or so of the tree before you put it up. Some places will do this for you right before you put it on your car. Sap from the tree sort of clogs up the bottom, and if you don't give it a fresh cut it won't take up water at all.
  • Tonight I'm making chocolate chip cookie pie and picking up a few grocery items to get us through the weekend.

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving dinner at my aunt and uncle's house, which will turn into a football party in the evening.

Friday I like to make pumpkin pancakes topped with crushed walnuts and real maple syrup :) The rest of the day we'll put up our Christmas lights, and likely purchase a couple new lights for outside. This summer we removed the bushes in front of the house that we used to put lights on, so we need to figure out what to put there.

Saturday H and I are going to a Christmas event at a winery a couple hours from us. They make our favorite local wine and we're so excited to finally visit the winery itself.

Sunday is the 13th anniversary of my Busia's passing, so we'll go to church and then do brunch with my family. We may start putting up the Xmas tree, but I have a feeling it'll turn into a veg day after a busy couple days.

Oh man, this is going to be a disaster waiting to happen. Water it twice/day? I'm screwed.
I found a stand that holds up to 1.5 gallons of water.  That's probably what I should go with, but FIL says he has one we can use.  God only knows what kind of condition it's in.

You've got this!  Don't be scared.  Get the good stand.  Our current stand is much smaller than 1.5 gallons, so I bet with that one once a day would be fine.  We'll be getting a bigger one this year, too.  For the last two years we've had issues with needing to saw a knot off of the tree to make it fit through the hole.  Picture is H tackling that problem in the living room of our old rental.  You don't get this kind of comedy from a plastic tree!

My other advice would be to get your tree from a farm or garden center if possible, as opposed to a big box or supermarket.  They just tend to last longer.  In RI we have a lot of farmers growing them locally, not sure if that's also the case in your neck of the woods.  Others bring in Canadian trees but give them a little more TLC than Home Depot is able to.

We always get ours thanksgiving weekend & keep it until the first week of January, and I maybe water it 3x/week.  We have never had a problem.

You need to have a good tree stand though.  If you get a tree stand that is in poor condition, invest in a good one.  After having their tree fall over twice my parents finally invested in a really nice tree stand that has a little lever you can push to be able to readjust the trees position once its in the stand.  After two years of spending 30+minutes putting our tree up and trying to get it secure but not crooked, I finally invested in one. This is the one we have, but I got it a lot cheaper at home depot last year: http://www.americansale.com/Products/Swivel-Straight-Real-Christmas-Tree-Stand__661232.aspx
  • I don't work on Wednesdays and we closed my work on Friday (using vacation time, but I honestly have too much anyway).

Wednesday - walked the dog for an hour, now doing laundry & will start cooking soon.  making cranberry nut bread, a kale and butternut squash lasagna, fudge, pumpkin pie, and prepping roasted vegetables with a maple apricot glaze

Thursday - yoga and then a walk with the dog in the morning, then to my parents in the afternoon for dinner

Friday/Saturday - Cleaning and making space for christmas decorations.  Getting our tree.  Maybe seeing family or friends at some point.  No real solid plans.

Sunday - teach yoga in the morning, then get organized for the work week
  • @brij2006 you will never go back from a real tree! They are every bit worth the effort and expense.
how much do they usually run in price?  We are in between trees now.  I'm tired of our fat fake tree - I feel it takes over half of our living room and I can never wait to pack it away in the basement.  We are going to look for a new fake tree this weekend.  I have a $200 gift card to seasonal concepts.  If I don't see any that I like we are going to buy a real tree just for this year.

Ours is not the norm, but a local farmer opens up a new piece of his property every year that is overloaded with evergreens.  It's $25 for anything under 10 feet, and $3/foot for anything over.  We'll probably get a 10 footer, but we have 12 foot ceilings.

Yeah, they give you a saw and you go have at it.  They still bag/wrap it and load it onto/in your vehicle.  It will be my first time, but I heard they're just labeled with colored tags to give you an idea on an approximate height.  So I've been told to aim for shorter than you want, because it may be 10'10" when it's marked as 10'.

  • Wed: H is home with the kids and I'm working. We're packing and heading out of town (my parents house) tonight hoping traffic will be good. Thankful I did our grocery shopping Monday! It's crazy out there today.

Thur: Thanksgiving with my family. We'll watch the parade in the morning. After our kids are in bed, H and I are heading out. H asked my parents to watch the kids so we can have some time to ourselves and to celebrate my birthday.

Fri: Probably some shopping, H has dinner plans and something else planned.

Sat: Head back to my parents house and spend time with family.

Sun: Back home. Probably set up the tree and decorate!
