Book recs for school-age kids, please.
I always like to get my niece and nephew each at least one book for Christmas, but I tend to struggle with what to get them.
He is 10, and into sports, like any 10 year old boy. He's also very emotional and very empathetic. His sister recently got a palate expander put in and is often in a lot of pain because of it, and he started acting out and having a bit of an attitude around the same time. It's like he feels whatever she is struggling with, and it's been like that for her whole life.
She is 7, and super girly. Her room is pink upon pink upon pink, with rhinestone accents and 1,000 stuffed animals. Everything about her is frilly and fluffy and pinkalicious. She's also an athletic kid, though.
Ideas?

That said, I haven't read Eragon, but is that popular with young kids? Or maybe The Golden Compass?

What about Choose your own adventure stories for the boy? Or Holes?
When I was 10, I enjoyed "A Wrinkle in Time." I was also thinking maybe a 10 year old boy would like the Percy Jackson books. Or... is "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" too mature for 10?
