What do you do with your old books?

Hi ladies,

I've finally filled a whole shelf with books I've read that I don't think I'll re-read. Just curious what you do with your old paperback and hardcover books when you are done with them? Do you sell them to a used bookstore (any ideas on how to find the best one?), do you give them to a charity, the library etc? I think I'll have at least 10 - 15 I would feel comfortable parting with, I'd love to see them go to a good home and get more use.

We usually take ours to the Friends of the Library sale.

I sell them at Half Price Books. Our normal library system doesn't have a used book sale, otherwise I would do that.

Before our HPB went out of business, I sold them. Now I just donate them to the library book sale.

If I had a bunch, I would take them to Half Price Books.

I've taken them to the library before for the book sale.

Today I dropped off three at our neighborhood's Free Little Library.

I did a big purge a while back where I donated a bunch to Goodwill and our library. I had good luck selling series books on eBay. I'm trying to be better about borrowing books from the library, I've run out of space and need to be choosier about what to buy.

I have a really hard time. If there's even a chance I might *someday* re-read that book I hate to part with it.

Thanks to birthday and Christmas gifts I've built a decent stack of paper backs that I haven't read. If I'm good to myself I won't buy anymore books until I read those and mix in my Overdrive holds, but let's be honest, you can't have too many books.

Thank you for the suggestions. I know my local library does a book sale, which I should check out myself. The last time I tried the sale a couple of years ago though the selection wasn't very good, I assume most people gave away the stuff they didn't like.

Last time we moved, we donated a bunch to the state veterans home. Places like veterans homes and nursing homes can sometimes use books for their libraries too. Maybe call first and see if they would be interested, though.

Generally when I purge books, they go to the library sale, though.

I donate them to the American Women's Club to sell in their annual English-language book sale at the 4th of July picnic.

First I offer them to any family or friends who I think may be interested. Then I either resell them at our local used book store or I put them the in one of my city's Little Free Libraries.
