Budget Help

Hello,
I haven't posted in a LONG time. I am need help on finding a good budget spreadsheet. I used to have one when we first got married but 2 computers later I can't find it. Does anyone have a good suggestion?
I know I can just write out all of the expenses and create a new one but I don't want to. LOL :)

Thank you

Re: Budget Help

  • We use the app you need a budget, but that costs to buy. I would recommend checking out Dave Ramsey's website. He recently came out with a new free budget app that you can use.
No ideas on where to download a good spreadsheet from though sorry.

  • We use Everydollar.com from that Dave Ramseys' crew created.  I'm officially a no-spreadsheet budgeter now.

  • We use an excel spreadsheet and it was a pre-made monthly budget template.  Over a year using it and I love it!

  • Where did you fine the pre fill spreadsheet? I do Google searches but I'm not liking them.

I use Microsoft Office Excel - when opening Excel, I searched for "monthly budget" and picked my favorite template.

Edit:  The one I use is called "Household Monthly Budget" and has a couple charts on it but I removed those.  Then I just personalized the item names.  For example, this template has a spot for a second mortgage but we don't have one.  I like that all the formulas are already there.  I use the second page/tab of the spreadsheet to tally up my expenses in certain categories (groceries, gas, etc).

  • I have one that we used to use available on drop box:

It's pretty specific, but it wouldn't be hard to customize it for your own needs. I was mostly concerned with making the tracking part easy, so every time you track an expense you can see how much you have remaining in that category of spending and in your overall budget.
  • If you want to PM me your e-mail address, I can send you a copy of the one we used before switching to everydollar.

Absolutely love it!  It's so user friendly, and there are so many things you can do within it.  Like creating sinking funds for annual expenses and things like that.

We use EveryDollar too and I definitely recommend it. I will say that no budget tool is perfect, but you can't let that stop you.

I really don't like the way EveryDollar handles sinking funds. We did a Christmas sinking fund in that we mostly funded in October and spent most of it in November. But ED treated it like we were overspending for the month because we spent more than came in through November income. It also doesn't let you put in savings transactions. It just assumes the savings at the end of the month based on what you budgeted under savings. I'm hopeful these things will get worked out as they continue improving the app since it's only been out since about March.

I have a friend who got married in July and she and her husband have been off and on trying to budget and pay off debt. She comes to me regularly with budgeting questions because she knows DH and I are in a focused debt-payoff. They'll go off the wagon for a couple months then she says they have a new budget app they're going to use and it will help so much. But the tool is useless if you don't commit to it. Some budget apps and sites or methods are better than others and it might take some tries to figure out what works best for your situation. But I don't think any system is without it's quirks or difficulties or little annoyances.
  • I was using every dollar but I'm in the trial phase of you need a budget and so far I like who it works better for our irregular income. You budget for the money you have. Starting out its tough since I had outstanding checks and credit cards due that threw off the budget but it works better for us so far.
