I know this was discussed a while back but I couldn't find it.  Any suggestions on how to handle a job offer when you are still waiting for information from another job option?  In this situation, job option A could likely be offering me a position yet this week - which if I accepted would move me to phase two - background check, physical, etc.  If phase two goes well, I would then sign the job contract.  I'm not sure how long all of this will take.  Job option B I'm waiting to hear back from to schedule an interview.  I know someone who works there and she stated that they are very interested in me.  Job option B would be ideal - better pay, benefits, etc.

I'm not sure how to handle this.  I'm still waiting for H to get home so we can chat.

Re: job offer question **update**

  • How long has it been since you applied for option B? I think it's acceptable to call and check on an application and possibly schedule an interview at the same time.
  • This may not be the best answer but is stalling an option. "I need a day or two to take it over" type of thing to see if you get the interview at job b. Otherwise start the process and see if something comes from job b

Option B: They have had my cover letter and resume for a week. They are accepting them the rest of this week. The insider/friend I know there has worked there for several years. Her boss is HR. She has told HR and the supervisor for the position I'm applying for, that I would be great for the job. I'm hoping they would call early next week to schedule an interview. My friend said I have "more than a great chance" at getting it. They want two years of experience, I have over eight. They are looking for two people to fill to identical openings.

Option A: They are looking to fill two identical openings. I don't know how fast I would need to make a decision. I was trying to figure out how I could professionally and politely delay it a little.

Overall, I don't look at my next job to be short term so this is a big decision that I take pretty seriously.

I have a "mentor" and she also suggested that I ask for extra time to decide.

I would take job A if job B wasn't an option. Job B is estimated to be approx $6/hr more per hour (when broken down), full time position, better 401k match, better health insurance coverage and better paid time off.

Job A is part time, no health insurance. Currently we have coverage through my H but from talking to my fiend, job B has some great coverage options - one option would give us the opportunity to drop H's coverage and save some money.

I know no one can tell me exactly what to do but it's really helpful to run this by others. I definitely don't want to make any negative impressions.

  • I would definitely stall for time then. It sounds like job b would be a better fit for several reasons.

The other thing I guess to think about, is how much loyalty would job a expect from you since it is a part time position? If you accept it and work there for a month and then job b offers you the position, I guess I would feel a little bad about that, but it's a part time job.

That's a hard spot to be in, definitely talk it over before you accept job a!

  • I've been in your shoes before and my advice would be to in-noticeabley stall. Since you are in the very beginning of interviewing and there is still another step for Option A, this should be relatively easy... If called back for step 2, try to schedule it the last day available. Testing/background checks can take awhile, too. Since you recently dropped off the application at Option B and also have an insider, I wouldn't call to ask about the process or to schedule an interview. Give them a bit of time, it sounds like they will hopefully move quickly! If offered a position with A, you can answer with something along the lines of "Thank you for the offer, I'm excited for how the interview process went and this opportunity. I would, however, appreciate a few days to decide". You don't want to say "no" or sound like you're holding out for something better just in case Option B doesn't pan out.

    Good luck!
  • I think if you do receive an offer from A and choose to accept, it would be alright to rescind your acceptance any time before signing the contract. I actually had that same thing happen to me recently. I was offered a job, I accepted and agreed on a date to sign paperwork, then the manager got sick/it was the week of Thanksgiving, so that date was moved. Then during that week I received another offer that paid a lot more, so I kindly told option A that I could no longer accept their offer.
As others have mentioned, saying you'd like a couple days to decide or you'd like to discuss the offer with your family is also a good option. I've actually read that saying you'd like to discuss with family is a good tactic during salary negotiations too.
  • I got a call this morning from A - they offered me the job.  I asked to have time to talk it over with H and call her back on Monday morning.  She said that sounded great.  Option B is accepting resumes through Monday but called me Wednesday to schedule an interview which is this afternoon.  I'm really hoping I get a good feel for the interview today.  My friend didn't realize they had called me for an interview but said she knows they are eager to fill the position.  She thought that was a great sign that they want me to come yet this week.  Option B would be much better financially with daycare costs!

Exciting!  That seems like a great sign they are already interviewing you before they've even stopped accepting resumes.  Good luck!
  • Good luck! Sounds like the timing may work out great.

  • Such great news!!!  Congrats!  I'm so glad for you that Job B offered you a position so quickly.  Plus it makes turning down Job A's offer quick, easy, and with no awkwardness.
  • Congrats!!!! So glad it worked out for you, and that the job you really wanted acted quickly!
