What did you read this weekend?

I hope I'm not stepping on any toes. I also hope everyone who celebrates had a nice holiday. What did you read, ignore, finish or make progress on? Anyone get any exciting books for a gift?

Re: What did you read this weekend?

  • No books as gifts, though I did get J the Elon Musk book.  He's pretty excited about that.

I'm working on Love & Death:The Murder of Kurt Cobain.  I watched Soaked in Bleach last week and downloaded the book.   I didn't realize they were closely tied so much of the information is the same, but there are so many WTF things that my brain is kind of spinning.  I'm a grunge fan, but I was a little young (12) when Kurt died, so it didn't quite impact me as much as others, but I'm so, so fascinated by this.

  • I'm reading The Lake House and have been for weeks.  I do like it but it's hard for me to read a lot of it at a time.  I only read at night and it's one of those books that needs more attention than my exhausted nighttime brain can give it.

I got the illustrated Harry Potter for Christmas from my mom.  So pretty!

I'm in the same boat, I love grunge but I was 11 when Kurt died so I don't know as much about it. I got "Everyone Loves Our Town: An Oral History of Grunge" and "This is a Call" a biography of Dave Grohl for Christmas so I'm excited to start that. I haven't heard of the Love & Death but I want to check it out now.

I started reading "Picture Perfect" a book about the Jodi Arias murder and trial. It's a pretty quick read, I got through 70 pages so far. For some reason I'm fascinated with that case and this book gets deeper into their personal lives before they met. I hope it stays as good, I'd love to read one more book this year.

I finished Furiously Happy, and I'm sort of re-reading Dragonfly in Amber. I've got a bunch of library holds about to come in and I don't want to be in the middle of anything new when those drop.

On a related note, check out what DH gave me for my birthday last week! I've already read everything here, though...yes, even The Silmarillion. The M-E Companion is a large encyclopedia/dictionary of all things LOTR--not really something you sit down and read. I read the Letters from Father Christmas in a day and if you like Tolkien's style you should totally pick this one up. His kids were so lucky to have such an imaginative father.

I'm trying to finish all of the books I randomly started and stopped during my mid-year reading funk.  So far I've gone through 3 e-book romances and that I didn't realize I was nearly done with anyway.  My GR feed looks like it's on fire, but it's making up for my drought.

I just flew through An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir that I'd bought when it came out and then for some reason stuck under my bed.  Seriously, I couldn't put it down - I finished it at about 3am.  This book is amazing!  Go forth and read it!  Immediately!

  • I finished "The Indifferent Stars Above" about the Donner Party and am still working on my re-read of TBH.

I got a B&N gift card and 'Ravensbruck' and 'A Problem From Hell' for Christmas.

  • I read The Circle by Bernard Minier and A People's History of American Empire.

I got a bunch of Drop Caps books and coloring books for Christmas and one of the Kate Spade books tumblers.

  • I finished The Nightingale last night.  Holy cow, it was so good!  I'm glad that I finally read it.

I got no books for Christmas (unless a new coloring book counts), but I did get a B&N gift card.

DH has been going on and on about another documentary that speculates that Courtney had something to do with Kurt's death. Kurt & Courtney, maybe?  Is the book really good?  I agree that it's all fascinating, and I feel like I want to learn more about it all.

@dutchgirl76 - I read that Dave Grohl biography recently, too.  It was great, but but very superficial - there's not really any input from Grohl, so it doesn't feel like you're really gaining much insight into him, kwim?  Also, he's still so young and has so much amazing shit still to do, it sort of feels incomplete.  I love Dave Grohl, though.  I think he's one of the most underrated musicians out there.

It is!  I typically don't read non-fiction.  The style doesn't really work well for me, but I've been really enjoying it.  There's definitely some things that I've learned about Kurt that are really, really interesting.  Soaked in Bleach definitely talks about Courtney being involved, or at least masterminding it.

  • I read Felicia Day's memoir. It was very cute, and I really identified with the whole growing-up-on-the-internet-in-the-90s thing. But the end with the discussion of gamergate made me sad. The Internet isn't the same place it used to be. It's not even the same place it was when I joined The Knot. Oh gee, how long have I BEEN here!?!?

  • @sassypants527 that's a pretty awesome haul!
I got five new books this Christmas which I'm super excited about. I can't wait to read H is for Hawk. Hopefully the pic works!

I made little progress on The Goldfinch because it feels so heavy.

I got All the Light You Cannot See for Christmas. I have tried to read it twice and cannot get into it. Guess I'll have to power through now.

Eh, I didn't love it and I really struggled.  I was expecting a lot more from it.

I've picked this one up three or four times now. I never finish more than a few pages. Just NMS.

I just feel that because it was a gift, I should read it because my cousin is going to ask about it.

  • I've had All the Light We Cannot See on my library ebook hold list for ages, and was really looking forward to it.  I'm sad to hear that so many of you guys struggled to get into it!

I honestly think we are the exception.  It was likely one of those books that was SO well received that I had really high expectations.
