Talk to me about City of Bones (NS please)

Is it really as amazing as I've heard?  It's fantasy, right?  or PNR?  That stuff is normally not really my style, but I have enjoyed a lot of the ones you all have recommended.

I had a hold on the ebook for ages, and now it's been on my kindle for over a week already and I haven't gotten to it yet.  Do I need to drop everything and read it before the loan expires?  Do I need to put holds on the sequels right now, too?

I also have Landline and Station Eleven on my kindle from the library, so I think I'm going to be switching to airplane mode to hoard all the books for as long as it takes me to get to them.

  • That series has a lot of mixed opinions.  I think it started really strong, but I never ended up finishing it. There's a lot twist that a ton of people have issues with.  IIRC a lot of people have issues with the author, too.

If it were me, I'd read Landline.

  • I ended up reading this series and liking it enough but there were definitely some story lines that were just unnecessarily drawn out too long.  I think there's six books in the series, too, which was a lot but I wanted to see it through.

I thought the Clockwork series was better and there's some character crossover between the two series.

I haven't read your other two but if you give City of Bones a try, I would at least put a hold on the second one.  It'll definitely increase in popularity once the shadowhunter show starts next week on ABC Family.
  • I don't know if I would rush to read it.  It's okay but not amazing and the series went on for way too long.

  • I liked the series but it's not a drop everything and read it now type thing.

I'd prioritize Landline over it for sure!!

  • Meh. I liked it okay, but I remember something happening at the end that made me not want to continue with the rest of the series.

  • I never read the second book, because of the plot twist at the end of the first. I've heard that it gets better, but I still haven't continued. I liked the first book up until that moment.

This. I read both series, though, and more or less liked them. The movie was horrible, unfortunately, so I hope the show is better.

  • I loved books 1-3. IMO, book 3 should have been the last one. I have 5 and 6 to go.

I agree re the movie. It really stunk

I liked the first 3 too, then not so much after that.  I read book 4 and the first 2 in the Infernal Devices Series and decided to stop.  I've heard that the last books were really good, I was just so over it by that point.

    This.

I was so underwhelmed by it, that I had to go back to Goodreads to make sure I was thinking of the right book. And here's what I wrote: "At first I thought it was entertaining for a quick, light read, but then the ending happened. Or rather, didn't happen. I'm not a fan of completely open endings, and the only bits of the plot that were resolved at all were added almost as afterthoughts."

  • Wow.  Thanks for all the reviews!

I think I'm going to hold off on it for now.  I have too many other things I want to read.

  • I read the first 5, but probably should have stopped after book 3. The ending for book 3 seems like a more logical ending for the whole series to me.

  • I feel like it was supposed to be a trilogy (wait, my first 3 books SAY trilogy, so.) but she was just making money and kept it going.  The first 3 books are engaging with a good storyline, I even re-read them before the 4th one came out so I was back up to speed.

The movie was great because I Netflixed it one night when hubs gone and I had a couple bottles of wine for company, and I'd been warned so I had super low expectations.  If I squinted realllllllly hard the acting was fantastic.
Anyway, there's a TV show now?  Or might be?  On the channel that used to be ABC Family?

I just found out about this!  I too loved these books (or the first few anyway), and was so disappointed with the movie that I just never even read the last one that came out.  Yesterday, I was looking through an Entertainment Weekly magazine from last month and saw an ad for it.  At first I wasn't sure if it was the same series, but after doing some research, it is!  I set it to DVR (it starts tonight on ABC Family, which is now known as Freeform... umm, why?), and I'm secretly super excited about it.
