NMR: smoke detectors

Does anyone know how to figure out what kind of smoke detector I have?

The builder didn't leave us any manuals, the brand name (Kidde) is on the detector but nothing that is helping me find an online manual to figure out how to change the batteries and how to get it off the ceiling.

Re: NMR: smoke detectors

  • You usually just twist to unlock it and then it comes down.  The batteries are usually either 2 AAs or a nine volt.
  • It's hardwired in the ceiling.  So I can't just pull it down, I need to figure out how to disconnect it which wasn't intuitive.  And I'm not quite tall enough to read the very small writing on the part that I thought I would be able to unplug or anything else inside.

  • I still do not understand why you need to take it off the ceiling? There should just be a cover that comes off that allows you access to the batteries (without removing the entire thing from the ceiling).

  • Because it access to where I think the battery should be is blocked by another piece, this is where the wires run into.  I think I need to disconnect those so I can open that panel.

But the ceilings are too high / I'm too short to see properly.  So instead of breaking it I was hoping to find a manual on line and see if I'm right or find an easier way, or even better - find out I have the model that either has a 10 year battery that won't need replacing before the alarm.

Is it the talking kind?  Is it a carbon dioxide dectector as well?
  • If you think you might have a 10 year battery, why are you taking it down at all?  This whole post is confusing.

If you are married I would just wait until your H comes home (assuming he is taller than you).  If you aren't married then it might be time to invest in a taller ladder.

The first one is just for smoke alarms the second is for the combo.  They have user manuals there.

We just had to replace our battery and we couldn't figure out how to get it off the ceiling either.

    Good luck!

I don't know what I have, that's the point of this post.  It's a possibilty since some come with that but I don't know for sure and if it's not, then I need to replace the battery.  I need to take it down (or at least part of it) because where I think the battery sits is blocked by another piece that I can't get off.

I'm typically the handy one, I figure DH has a 75% chance of breaking it.  The goal is to keep the smoke detectors working in the end :)

It doesn't talk and I know it's not a CO detector as well.

    Thanks for the links.

  • Maybe Kidde PI2010?
Here you can see the photo and description.

    (9 volt battery)
  • I agree a step ladder of some type might be helpful.  Most of the hardwired smoke detectors I've seen, you push in and twist.  It'll then "pop" out.
